Yup, great work by Ken Holland losing all leverage over Nurse. Now Darnell either holds the Oilers over a barrel (because they know they have no defensemen in Bakersfield) or simply walks to free agency. I mean, it's like Chiarelli never left Edmonton :D

This is how you can end up with the Dion Phaneuf situation, where you can't afford to sign the guy but you seemingly can't afford to lose him either.

Caleb Jones can probably be a serviceable middle pair guy. And that's about it.

And with Nurse playing alongside Bear, his value is only going to go up the next two years.

Thank God Edmonton is still Edmonton-ing enough to distract even the tiniest bit from the dumpster fire in Buffalo.

Edmonton can play next season and try to sign Nurse to an extension with a year to go before his UFA. If at that point there’s no deal to be made they can still move him for a decent return.

In short, they could still totally Oiler this but they haven’t really Oilered it yet.

Are you saying the wheels have been greased for Edmonton to totally Oiler this?!?

Of course they COULD still re-sign him next year,
but the optics of "want to be an Oiler supercedes anything else" followed very shortly
with a deal that takes him exactly to UFA is extremely on-brand.

Seems like a lose-lose for the Oilers with this contract.

Even with term and several UFA years, is Nurse worth much more than $5.6M/year? I'd say not really. The point of the bridge deal is to save cap space in the short term at the price of not locking up the player long-term. This deal spends a pretty solid bit of cap space for the next two years and gives no long-term security that Nurse will be around past this contract.
