Wow, I had forgotten about him, so went to see how he is doing in STL. 16 games, 2 goals and 3 assists. Per game, it matches his production last year in EDM.

Not one of the best #1 selections ever made. . .
that includes a somewhat hot start.
1 lonely assist in is last 10 games.
he's been back to healthy scratch status recently.

coach made a comment (paraphrasing)
"I'm not sitting him to send a message, he's just not among our 12 best forwards"

ouch

According to the latest Forbes list only 11 franchises in the NHL are valued at more than the $500 million the Vegas Golden Frankincense and Myrrh paid as an expansion fee. Good luck on that ROI, Mr. Foley.

You have to be an especially shrewd business person to pay more than the average just to get in.

That's not counting the costs of actually running the team he's gonna incur the first few years.

But all those people wanted season tickets, so it's destined for success.

My guess is that they'll sell out every game for the first few years. I can't imagine tickets going unsold to all the casinos out there, let alone the tourists. Going to be interesting...that's for sure.

Barring some shrewd GM'ing that somehow converts a bunch of borderline second and third liners into bonafide first and second liners, they're going to be a very bad team at least next season and likely for a couple afterward.

Just looking at this from a best case scenario, they get a good goalie and maybe two defencemen who would be good 2nd-pair guys on a wild card contender. What does that make them? A poor man's version of the NJ Devils of the last few years? Who the hell is going to be entertained by that in a city with literally endless entertainment options?

Speaking of NJ, looks like Taylor Hall will be back on the ice either tonight or Saturday. Good to see - despite missing these games he's still only 5 pts back of the 2nd-leading scorers on the Oilers.

It seems crazy, but I just don't think the product on the ice is going to matter the first two years. I think they know that they'll stink. That's doesn't mean these games won't be sold out.

But the problem (in terms of health of the franchise and the game) is those seats will be filled with people who couldn't get tickets to Penn and Teller or were given comp tickets because their lobster on the buffet was undercooked and they complained.

DGB's timeline has some pretty good discussion going about how the NHL is using the loser point to create a false sense of greater parity if anyone's interested.

Also, Burke might be worried about his teams not competing past Christmas but maybe that's just the natural by-product of running teams for 7 years and having exactly one winning record to show for it.

All kidding aside, that quote is kinda Paul Maurice in a nutshell ain't it.

Yeah, I read his stuff pretty regularly, and he's been harping on this false sense of parity for quite a while. He makes some pretty good points really.

He had a reply from the NHLnumbers guy and linked to this story from a couple years ago:

A quick look at what effect the loser point has had on the NHL standings | NHLNumbers.com

In those 5 years the only team that made the playoffs with the loser point that wouldn't have without it is the 2012 Stanley Cup champions. Which is a big deal, obviously, but on the whole kinda begs the question what is the point of the point if such a simple study shows it has almost no effect on parity?

Mr. Tony might've had a point.

Hes had a few good points over the years ... when he first talked about "game management" by NHL refs, people called him a loon but Ive seen others in ms-hockey-m talk about it over the years

He also called NHL to Vegas in 2014 I believe :noidea:

I guess sometimes when a monkey throws shit against the wall it sticks lol
