Sunrise is not small. Sunrise is old. In fact pretty much anywhere south of Daytona (along the coast) there are a lot of people.

And, apparently, none of them like hockey.

And now for something completely different. Kopi misses Richards. Tries to drag him back to Kings bench.

That was definitely a hand-in-hand. Expect Lombo to void Kopi's contract soon.

Not only that, but it's a good 20+ miles from any major population centre.

WTF was with all the fucking suburban arena building in the late 90s-early 00's?

build it and they will come probably ... Glendale was all about land development ... malls/condos ... People will come ray ... they will come lol

then nhl asg needs to be more NBA ASG ... ALL STAR BREAKAWAY DUNK CHALLENGE!!!!
I was just sitting here thinking about making a joke about a combined NHL-NBA all star weekend. The thing is, I am not sure it sounds like a bad idea. Have some NBA stars attempt some hockey drills, have some NHL stars attempt some NBA drills, and then have them compete in some third event. Also it would be a good opportunity to have Panger tell Blake Griffin to play the white way.

 you could have something there ... plus Id like to see Griffin break his hand on Pangers face

88k people ??? ... give kelowna an NHL team then

In 18 square miles, for a pop density of 4,666 per square mile (twice the population density of Detroit). And next town over is Ft Lauderdale with 6,000 per sq mile.

Miami, whose downtown if less than 15 miles away is 5 million people. Pop density 11,205 sq/mile. Number of people is not the problem in Florida. Number of people that give a shit is. They could build the arena on south beach and allow topless women spectators in for free and the place would still never be full.

and Im not saying the distance of the franchise from the population is THE ONLY problem ... its true ... the give a shit meter is below zero at this point ... probably would be higher if the arena was located where the people had a viable opportunity to attend games on a regular basis ... at this point, probably cant change that

The arena is literally built next to a giant swamp. It was doomed to failure to begin with.

The goal of the Panthers, like it was every other Bettman Boondoggle, was building a hockey fanbase in a place where hockey wasn't popular. Why they would site their new mission for this in an inaccessible, out of the way, swamp-surrounded location that is central to literally no population or region is beyond explicable. There may never have been a chance to build a fanbase, never have been a chance for hockey to succeed in this region, but if there was even the slimmest of hope that it would having an arena people would want to and could go to was essential.

To be fair (deported) going anywhere in Florida is an adventure. People all drive according to the laws of the country they originally came from. And based on what those laws were when they started to drive oxen carts and them fancy newfangled horseless carriages.

I've been there a few times. It feels like a population crush. And I grew up in the mid-atlantic.

The arena is literally built next to a giant swamp. It was doomed to failure to begin with.

I am not defending the location, just trying to dispel this idea that it would be akin to the Leafs building an arena in Owen Sound. It's not that far. I grew up 15/20 miles northeast of Baltimore and would drive an hour north to Philly, or an hour south to DC to watch hockey. Distance is no excuse for people that care. And Sunrise is not *that* far from an assload of people.

The issue is those people don't care. As evidenced by what started this, they won't even watch on TV.

So if you lived 35 miles from Rogers, you'd stop watching?

Do you think anyone who lives in Abbotsford makes the trip to Vancity?

It would be akin to the Raptors building a barn in Oshawa in the late 90s - still plenty of people around, but an unrealistic target audience and a sport not truly well-known to the locals. The Raptors would not be the success they are today had that been the case.

The Panthers are essentially the Raptors in Oshawa.

i dont think you can switch the sitch ... urban versus rural (more or less) ... and at this point the canucks have been established as a vancouver entity for over 40 years ... but if you want an answer to the very nonsensical question ... Id stop going ... and over time I might stop watching ... because they wouldnt be my "hometown" team anymore

and that second question is nonsense because rural (more or less) abbotsford doesnt compare to urban Vancouver ... people want to go downtown regardless ... no matter what the region
