Necas seems like a lot to give up for 6 games of Rantanen after Marchand injures him in the 4 nations bonspiel and then he walks in July. I’d say the Dives won this trade.

All Necas needs to do is play 94 regular season games for the Dives and he'll be right beside Ray in the rafters.

So Chicago lost Hall, gained half of Rantanen's salary and only got a 3rd rounder? Their OWN third rounder back.

Master Class. Did they hire Bowman back?
Hall was basically given away. He’s a high cap hit and is kinda crap now. There wasn’t much to get there.

A 3rd to retain is maybe a little light but for a pending UFA on a team that doesn’t have any cap issues who are also shedding $6 mil I don’t find it to be particularly bad value.

My thinking was if they had just directly retained on Hall which would have been just about the same money that probably could have netted a second. Instead, they got involved to facilitate a division rival's move and got less.

I've just never seen anyone weaponize cap space against themselves.

I don't think this is a panic move by Colorado, it appears that they couldn't get Rantanen re-signed at a figure they were comfortable with and decided to get some assets back rather than lose him for nothing. The other thing to keep in mind is that they are likely not done yet making moves before the trade deadline.

Not sure where Strickland is getting his info, but everything else I have seen is that Rantanen and Avs had been heavily involved in extension talks and both sides were willing to talk in-season it was just that Colorado realized it couldn't get there and risked losing him for nothing.

Maybe the timing of it was a surprise but it doesn't sound like Rantanen should have been surprised they couldn't make it work.
