This is a fine and dandy comparison, but I don't think anyone would argue Dalton isn't one of the most NFL ready QB's to ever come out of a draft. He has looked better than almost any QB I can remember seeing in their first 5 games. But there's only so much you can get from that.

Though it is nice to see that Palmer's completion percentage through 5 games was horrible yet he still ended the season at 61%. Gives me some hope for Dalton.

Yeah, just a small sampling that in the grand scheme of things could end up completely meaningless. It is nice to see though that even after a year of learning, Carson struggled more than Dalton. Then again, Carsons numbers there include games against the Ravens (9-4), Jets (10-6), and Steelers (15-1), all three of which were highly rated defenses that year. The other two, Browns and Dolphins, ended the year at 4-12 in typical franchise fashion.

I'm happy with Dalton. He doesn't have physical talent that Carson possessed as a young player, but he looks like a guy that is going to be a successful quarterback in this league. If we could get more production on the ground, we would be in good shape.

As far as I'm concerned Dalton has been a pleasant surprise.....he has performed well with the game on the line, and to me that is the most important factor.....the offense has some pieces, but needs to run the ball more consistently....whether that is on the line or the criminal running back I'm not sure, though I think it's probably a little bit of both......as far as taking more chances goes, unfortunately Marvin will never be that guy......we still have a major hole at LG and another one at slot receiver until Shipley comes back.......

What scares me is the number of looks Caldwell is getting in the slot as opposed to what Shipley was.

Could Shipley not have known where to be in this offense? Does Dalton just not have a good rapport with Shipley like he seems to with Caldwell?

Either way, it's a lose-lose.

Good point...also notable that many, if not most of the negative plays this offense has suffered have involved some combination of Caldwell and Livings....

I will say that it appears that Caldwell runs fantastic routes and often finds ways to get open in the middle of the field..... The fact that he can't catch and has made so many significant boneheaded negative plays in such a short career should be mentioned!

He's honestly not much different from his brother.

I think he's a near perfect clone of Reche.......

This is Dalton's first year with Shipley, Shipley got hurt in Denver in week 2 by halftime wasn't it?

Dalton had 1.5 weeks with Shipley in his first 1.5 games of his NFL career (where Dalton was also hurt for the second half of the Browns game). He has had 3.5 games with Caldwell in his last 3.5 games of his career. I would imagine...

1) Dalton is getting more and more comfortable in NFL games now and checking down.

2) The playbook is opening up a little more week by week as the young guys get a stronger hold of the basic playbook which may not target the slot as often.

I think if Shipley was still healthy and playing, we would be talking about him as much as Green and Gresham. Plus, our 3rd down conversion over the previous 3 weeks would have been much much better.
