Absolutely, he was a great captain but he wasn't the most vocal. If he was more quotable or had a bigger personality I think he would receive more recognition. But like Dash said he was clutch.

There are all kinds of leaders, and "Quoteless Joe" did his leading on the ice. I think playing in the same era as Messier and Yzerman and on the same team as Roy might keep Sakic out of people's memories as far as great captains go. As a Wings fan I saw plenty of Sakic and what he could do, and I personally consider him to be an equal of Stevie Y in terms of leadership. I know a lot of people don't see it that way, but they were almost the same player.

That is definitely true. Roy had the big personality and loved the attention. As may take some of the spotlight, it also allows Sakic to be the on ice leader and not worry about some of the other distractions.

As much as the Avs and Wings fans used to hate each other they always had a mutual respect for the captains. Hate the rest of the bastards on the other team but had an appreciation for the Yzerman and Sakic, gotta love it.

I was actually a huge sakic fan since he started in quebec much like yzerman the two were very hard not to like.like you all said he may not have been vocal but he led by example and always did it in a very respectable manner. To be honest keeping some of the egos on those avs teams seemed like a job in itself.based on accomplishments and what he showed on the ice I cant see any way he shouldnt be there over iggy.
