New rumor involving something Chuck Long said. I have not verified. Do I think it is true what he said? Nope, not in the way people are taking it.

I am off to a a dinner shindig with the rich and powerful so I will have to look it up later.

from what I've read, Chuck gave a speech, and at the end said Texas is interested in the B1G.
Dont think anyone has yet confirmed if it's real, or just a rumor he heard, or what.

So basically by your own admiration of Nash, collective bargaining on a grand scale would happen if it was perceived that a group of 60+ could negotiate a higher per team payout, than a group of 16..
Yep, that Brown article has put AD's and presidents on alert per radio here today. Still prob at least 10 years away but his idea in the article (given to him by tv executives) at least has the conferences doing the math. Long way to go but I think it makes a lot of sense.

And why would Chuck Long know this I'm wondering

apparently he said it, at the end of a speech, and everyone there heard it.

question is, what does it mean? and maybe more importantly, where did he get this info?

Technically, your timeline is correct, but very much incomplete (and as such, misleading.)

The lawsuit that broke the monopoly the NCAA had on television contracts was indeed brought by Oklahoma, but also by Alabama. And it was supported by a large number of other schools. The result lead to the formation of the College Football Association (CFA) which collectively bargained for television rights for the 64 member schools.

It was after Notre Dame defected from the CFA in 1991 by signing a five-year contract with NBC that all hell began to truly break loose. For example, the SEC partnership with CBS did not begin until 1996.

What the Texas article talks about is basically a return to the days of the CFA. What makes it unlikely is that the same conditions (greedy schools or conferences) that can negotiate on their own and that are willing to leave others behind in the dust. The new twist is that there are quite a few more players in the game on the television side, making for more possible revenue streams available to be negotiated.

But when the name of the game in terms of gaining an advantage is to divide and conquer, more players with a seat at the bargaining table makes a unified voice even less likely. So I really don't expect to see a reversal of history and a return to the CFA days. I expect for people to continue to bargain for their own benefit and without giving a second thought to the welfare of those around them.

Huge difference. That was all encompassing, not the top 60-65 teams that have shrewd people that are quite familiar with the process.

I had not heard about this. I've always wanted both UT and OU to come on over. Would make for one hell of a conference.

Hey, this all started with the Husker post- left ME hanging, so I started scouring the interwebs.

All I found were comments that Chuck Long, in a speech to some group of B1Gs, threw that in at the close of his speech.

Let me do some more digging in cyber land.

One thing I just read, FWIW, is that Boren let the cat out of the bag, in a sense, by pointing out that the conference can add schools without diluting the money the current members are making (a huge point in the bylaws/contracts that almost nobody was aware of), and that the conference has already made the decision to expand.

It says that UCF has already been selected as one, and the Cincy or Houston will be number 12.

So, the B1G talk is just a ruse or pseudo threat by Boren/Texas to get any recalcitrant conf members to agree to the move.

This was written by someone who is just guessing, just like the rest of us

There was some other stuff, but that blog was the only part of it that was more than just people spouting off.

Sounds like Oklahoma/Texas are going to make all the other schools in the conference like it or else.
I always thought Cinn. would be a good addition. And probably need UCF because of such a huge TV market. Both would be good for recruiting.
Whatever. Neither gets me that excited.

Memphis would be better than Houston. No Texas schools should even be considered if the Big 12 is trying to expand its footprint.

Completely agree. Houston doesn't expand the footprint and adds another Power 5 school to recruit against.

Memphis, Cincy, Colorado State-people can debate it forever but it's not like there is a Nebraska out there looking to make a move so does it really matter who ends up getting lucky.
