As most on here know, my wife and I relocated about 2 weeks ago for her job. Lateral move really. no biggie, we do it about every other year anyway.

So, Wednesday last week, a fella flies in from Iowa to specifically speak to her about taking over one of his hotels. Offers her what amounts to about $12k over what she is making now, and offers me a position running the maintenance department. He also offered up the money needed to reimburse her current company for the money spent moving us to this current location.

She is not tied here by any contract, but she has been with the company for several years. She has friends in the company. She has little opportunity to move up.

Her best friend is the person who mentioned her name to the guy. She runs another of his properties.

Take the money and run or stay put for the seniority?

What are the bennies?

Health insurance.

Life insurance

401K matching at least 5%.

Paid vacation days a year

Retirement

Pure salary or will there be paid overtime for both of you?

Is the place established and in good shape or a shithole that someone's trying to make a quick buck on, you'll be working 18 hours a day, and have customers bitching at you left and right?

I'd take the money. I mean the guy specifically wanted her, so sounds like a good move with good potential if she does a good job at that location.

my aunt and uncle were in the hotel/apartment management business, he did the maintenance as well. it always seemed like a sweet gig to me. at the apartment buildings they always got a huge apartment which was usually 2 apartments converted into one and it was free. then most of the time they didn't have to do much. show apartments, get people moved out or resigned, general maintenance.

Comparable insurance to what we have now.

We do our own retirement investing.

2 Weeks

Salary for her, may be required to cover a shift if someone calls in, en sech. I am hourly, and basically on an "As needed" schedule.
Also includes an on site apartment, which of course has internet and cable TV provided at no cost.

Recent remodeling, all new AC's and appliances throughout the place. Also has a swimming pool/hot tub. (Not necessarily a bonus in my eyes.)

I don't know you, but I suggest that your wife and you should do whatever you believe would make you two the happiest in the long run, regardless of risk. If you're not really that happy now, but merely feeling secure, you may always wonder what might have been if you don't take this shot. But there's much to be said for security. Me, I went for the change and it worked out very much for the better. Hope it goes well whichever way you go.

Moving fucking sucks, but if it offers some stability and homestead, or promote if that's what she's after, then I'd be hard pressed to turn up 12k + with that on the line. My wife being military we move every 3 yrs mandatory for career progression but for me it severs my network which is essential and devastating to my profession so I'd be all over it if it involved not relocating for a bit. Sounds like a good opportuntiy
I'd definitely heat her friends ear up who recommended her about the Co. and stability of and such to make sure you don't get hung out to dry after leaving a stable position, it's happened to plenty of people I know who set out to pasture off a legit offer seemingly only to get the news shortly after that the Co. was being liquidated

Well 12K is about 7K by the time uncle sugar gets done with ya. Unless you defer a good portion to a 401/Roth IRA type fund.

New appliances are nice. Those fuckers will eat up some time if they're old and breaking all the damn time.

For someone who likes to fish, Iowa kicks the crap out of Kansas so there's your happiness to consider.

Depending what part of the state there's Minnesota to the north, the Great Lakes to the northeast, or the Ozarks to the south.

Salmon fishing out of Kenosha, Wi is awesome.

That.

You don't want a situation where someone bought the place just to flip it after a remodel. A new owner often installs their own management.

If it is Mike Whelan, Heart of America, he is a GOOD GUY. If it is Dan Kehl, I would do more homework on him. He is a bit shady. If I hit on either of them, I am willing to go private conversation with you. But Heart of America is a really well run company.

Your wife's friend should have the dirt on the company, especially if she has been there a few years.

If this hotel is on I-80 or one of the big cities in Iowa I would do it. If it is like Tama, Iowa, or Burlington, Iowa forgetaboutit.

Winters will be a little tougher than Kansas, but not as many blizzards.

I know of one other hotel owner group, and it is a good one also. Name escapes me right now.

I have a Brother-in-Law and a friend who both are Hotel Managers and they seem to like what they are doing based on the amount of time they have been doing it. It does seem that they change hotels quite often. If the sales aren't there (bad economy, bad location, etc....) the owners won't skip a beat in finding someone else to run their properties. Hotel Managers are like being a manager of a MLB team, one down year and you will be on the unemployment line. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Take the money if you think it's enough to justify the move. There is no such thing as loyalty in this day in age. That current company will screw you and your wife over the very first sign of any economic headwinds. Gotta look out for #1

Actually, he will be a new owner. He takes possession on Dec 31. He bought it because he wants to have 5 solid core properties. Until a couple of years ago he owned about 13 properties.

Boats and hoes.

Which job will bring more of these into your life? That is the question that must be answered.

Have the wife keep her current job and you offer to run the hotel. Problem solved.

Then later on down the road, you hire a sloot do do "maintenance".

Sounds like a plan. Except I not only lack the knowledge to run a hotel but, also lack the ambition. WAY too lazy for that kinda shit.
