Our cap problems are over:

La'el Collins - T - Cowboys
Cowboys RT La'El Collins has restructured his contract.

The Cowboys are converting $150,000 of his salary into a signing bonus. It gives Dallas some minor cap relief. After signing a two-year extension last July, Collins is signed through 2019.

$150K...WTF??? I'm guessing this has nothing to do with the cap at all and more to do with Collins maybe needing some money for something.

I think his tank is empty. Pass
He's 35 and a career 3-4 guy. I'd pass too.
While I would like to have see the Cowboys sign a Safety or WR, the smart move is to probably just try and resign their own. Lawrence and Hitchens are must's IMO, and I think the team should place a 1st round tender on Irving. If they go with a 2nd round tender, I think he is gone. The team has 6 picks in the first 4 rounds to add depth at OL, DL, LB, WR...And they have to look down the road. Dak will count $700K against the cap this year, before long that number will be $20 million+ per...or, if they feel he is not their guy, it will still cost them 8 figures for a decent starter

Any confirmation that Lawrence will get the franchise tag?

I sure as hell hope not. I want a deal. If we give him a nice offer and he gives Dallas a bit of a discount for sticking by him through some of his "problems" we could use it elsewhere if need be.

I was listening to Mickey Spagnola last night, he said Lawrence was definitely getting the tag and the team is torn between letting him play on it in a "prove it again" year or signing him long term. I hope it's long term, as he said resigning Hitchens hinged on it, if Lawrence plays on the tag, they probably won't pay Hitchens the $5-$6 million per he will command

Let hitchens test the market. So tired of players giving full effort in contract year and then stinking it up after they sign a lucrative deal. For this reason Lawrence will be franchised. Lawrence also has an injury history. I think adding Johnson would be a good move

DLaw wanting 17 mill/ yr on average. Ouch. I guess the negotiations have to start somewhere.

FT is 17.5M so 17 is a bargain, except the team doesn't have cap space to make it happen and sigh the rooks.
I'm thinking the sign him at 17M average over 5 years with most of the $$$ in years 4 and 5.
Bonus and first 3 years guaranteeing 40 to 50M

it will probably be a 7 year deal with the last half being bullshit.
Signing bonus spread through 5 years.

True. I think they have to get him signed with a low 2018/19 cap hit since they only have a little over 18M available. The FT will hurt a whole lot.

Agree, just looking at available space right now. I believe if they use the FT they cannot negotiate a long term deal until after the season. Paying Lawrence 17.5M in 2018 isn't good for the rest of the roster.
If Dez is cut, the 1st pick will be a WR.

Would you consider trading him for a 1st? I would just pay him the $17, but it's an option, franchise him and deal him

I'd like to keep him.
To me the most impressive thing about him this year was how well be played the run and still among the league leaders in sacks

I agree. I'm not a Dez hater, but if it means keeping DLaw, Hitch and Irving, I'm all for cutting him if he won't take a pay cut. The Cowboys built a great OL, and are getting closer on D. They say a running game and defense will take you a long way...if the Boys draft another stud OL and a couple more defenders, that'll be covered

Agree, I would like to keep Dez one more season paired with a deep threat, but not at the cost of losing DLaw.
