Release period for RG III highlights key offseason dates for Redskins
Good discussion by Keim on key dates this offseason. The two week period between February 16 to March 1 marks the beginning and the end of the time when teams can slap the tag on a player. This is important for Cousins since if we don't have a deal by February 16, which is four weeks from now, we will have to consider using the tag. And, if there's no deal by February 29, McCloughan will then be forced to use the tag on KC. This doesn't mean a deal won't happen, but if Cousins' gets tagged, that's a sign that negotiations aren't going well.
March 9 then becomes another important date. That's the date when teams can exercise their options on players like RGIII. If RGIII isn't cut by then, his $16.155M option then gets counted against our cap. If we want to trade him, we'd better start working on getting him to re-work his deal. Of course, why would he do that? If he gets cut, he can sign wherever and whenever he wants for whatever he can command.
