Thank you that they didn't spend money on bringing Kunitz back.

And please, I love Cullen, but this is another step backwards...

I'm calling it now, no playoffs this upcoming season...

I don't like Johnson's game the past several years, and I don't like giving five years to a guy over 30, but Tortorella's system famously diminishes players' offensive skills, and Johnson possesses those tools. I think it's an unnecessary risk, but it's not doomed to fail, either. And the money isn't terrible, either, at least not for the first couple years.

The hope here is that his talent comes out in a not-Torts system. It worked for Oleksiak and Schultz, the change of scenery, system, and supporting cast. The difference here, of course, is age.

Unless both Crosby and Malkin go down for extended stretches, they'll make the playoffs. Those two make an otherwise bad team mediocre, and you only need to be mediocre to make the playoffs.

But the Cullen signing at league minimum is a decent depth move, I think. Don't call on him for second line minutes like his last stint, and he's basically just insurance against having to use Carter Rowney.

I stand by my call...they still have Murray in net. I have no faith in him... especially when the D still has Letang and now Johnson! Horrible

I am hoping there is a positive out of this, IE the change of scenery. And Torts system was awful for him I hope he makes a liar out of all of us. If not they are stuck with over 10 million in salary for two over 31 defensemen for the next 4 years that are, at the moment, looking very diminished in their skills.

This...
I like the Cullen signing, great filler piece. They already have Crosby, Malkin, Brassard and Sheahan in front of him at C. This is a huge upgrade over Rowney and keeps there C position strong for another season.

He's the energizer bunny. Just keeps going and going, FU retirement!

IMO they missed his grit last year.

Even if they're hoping for the change of scenery positive, why 5 years instead of 3???

Yeah that is insane. I really don't get it because we all know they weren't in a bidding war for his services.

Hope and Change...not a way to bring a team around. Why do this freaking deal at all?!

I think the frustrating part about most of this is that they freed up two bad contracts to bring on a newer bad contract.

EDiT and Sheary's wasn't that bad.

I wonder if Jooris gets a real look this year. He looked pretty good in his limited action. Seemed to have some size and some wheels.

Pens don't seem to value size or good stay at home D men. I think Rutherford has worn out his welcome...

Back to back Cups followed by bowing out in the second round to the eventual champions isn't really wearing out a welcome. And no one values stay-at-home defensemen anymore, because they're not valuable.
