A.J. Jenkins - WR - 49ers

CSN Bay Area believes A.J. Jenkins will enter training camp with a "slight lead" over Quinton Patton to start opposite Anquan Boldin.

By most accounts, Jenkins has had a strong offseason on the heels of his lost rookie campaign. Patton is drawing a ton of hype in fantasy circles, but he'll have to be unequivocally better than 2012 first-rounder Jenkins to win the starting job. We give the edge to Jenkins. Related: Quinton Patton

Mario Manningham - WR - 49ers

Mario Manningham (ACL, PCL surgery) is not expected to return until late August.

Manningham is six months removed from multiple knee surgeries and is a candidate to open the season on the reserve/PUP list. The 49ers expect him to be ready "at some point" in 2013. With Manningham sidelined, A.J. Jenkins will enter training camp as the slight favorite to start opposite Anquan Boldin.

Kyle Williams - WR - 49ers

49ers WR Kyle Williams (ACL surgery) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Williams missed all of OTAs, but remains on track to return in late July. If he can prove he's healthy, he'll compete for playing time with A.J. Jenkins and Quinton Patton this preseason.

Posting for the Lattimore Part.

NFL news roundup: Aaron Hernandez money voided, Marcus Lattimore will sit out training camp - SBNation.com

Lattimore won't take part in training camp

San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore said that he won't participate in training camp on Saturday. Lattimore, a rookie recovering from significant college knee injuries, took part in team OTAs, but will likely begin the regular season on the non-football injury list, which would have him out through Week 6 of the regular season.

As noted at Niners Nation, the 49ers have options with Lattimore:

If he goes on the NFI list, he'll have to wait that first six weeks before practicing. After that, the team can consider their options with him. Depending on how the rest of the roster is performing, my guess is he ends up spending the entire season on the injured list. That being said, the 49ers placed Jewel Hampton on the NFI list, but then moved him to the 53-man roster late in the season. You never know how it will play out.

Michael Crabtree - WR - 49ers

Michael Crabtree (Achilles' surgery) said he'll begin rehab workouts Tuesday.

Crabtree is now six weeks removed from surgery to repair his fully torn right Achilles' tendon. He has at least 4 1/2 months of rehab in front of him. In a best-case scenario, Crabtree will be eased back in for the final quarter of the regular season and then contribute in the playoffs.

Kyle Nelson - TE - Free Agent

49ers waived LS Kyle Nelson.

A former undrafted free agent, Nelson appeared in six games for the Chargers last season. They could easily end up being the only six games of his career.

Report: 49ers remain interested in Collie

The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers remain interested in free agent Austin Collie, but are unlikely to sign him before training camp.

Collie worked out for the 49ers last month. Per beat writer Matt Barrows, the 49ers want to see how their young receivers and veteran fliers fare in camp before making a move on a more established talent like Collie. Fully recovered from his knee injury and spate of concussions, Collie has also worked out for the Patriots. How much Collie's body has left remains to be seen, but he'd be an intriguing addition to the 49ers offense.

Garrett Celek - TE - 49ers

CSN Bay Area believes 49ers TEs Garrett Celek and MarQueis Gray are competing for one roster spot.

Celek, the younger brother of Brent, earned a spot last year as an undrafted free agent following a strong training camp. Gray, a college quarterback, receiver, and running back, has the athleticism check mark in his favor, but we'd give the slight edge to Celek since he already knows the ins and outs of the offense. Darius Fleming - LB - 49ers

49ers second-year LB Darius Fleming will transition to inside linebacker this season.

Fleming was drafted as an outside linebacker in the fifth round out of Notre Dame last year, but he tore his ACL in rookie minicamp. He's expected to be full-go for the start of training camp next week, and he'll try to earn a roster spot behind starters Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman.

Tarell Brown - DB - 49ers

The Sacramento Bee wonders if CB Tarell Brown is in the 49ers' future plans.

Brown, 28, is entering the final year of his contract, one in which he'll earn a base salary of $2.925 million. Beat writer Matt Barrows points out that the 49ers typically like to lock their contract-year players up well before they are set to hit free agency. The team's best cover corner, Brown recorded 14 pass breakups and graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 13 corner last season.

Tramaine Brock - DB - 49ers

The Sacramento Bee believes 49ers CB Tramaine Brock's roster spot could be in jeopardy.

Ever since a broken hand in Week 2 of the 2011 season, Brock has been limited to special teams work. He appeared in all 16 games last season, but participated in just 30 defensive snaps. Brock was re-signed to a one-year, $1.323 million contract as a restricted free agent back in March.

Chris Culliver - DB - 49ers

The Sacramento Bee insists CB Chris Culliver is still in the 49ers' long-term plans, and they have no plans to convert him to safety.

After Culliver's disastrous Super Bowl performance, there were whispers he could be transitioned to safety. Also, following his homophobic remarks and insensitive comments about women, many wondered if the soon-to-be 25-year-old's roster spot was in jeopardy. Culliver is just one of a two experienced 49ers corners under contract for the 2014 season, so he's not going anywhere.

Michael Crabtree - WR - 49ers

CSN Bay Area expects Michael Crabtree (Achilles' surgery) to begin the year on injured reserve/designated for return.

The PUP list is another possibility, but injured reserve/designated for return makes more sense because Crabtree is expected to miss in the neighborhood of 10-12 games. It's highly unlikely the 49ers lose another player as important as Crabtree between now and Week 1, making him the obvious candidate for the team's lone "return" tag. Unless your redraft league is exceptionally deep, there's little reason to use a late-round flier on Crabtree.

Michael Crabtree - WR - 49ers

49ers placed WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles' tear) on the active/PUP list.

It's a relevant move because active/PUP means Crabtree will open the 2013 season on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games. He's not going to be the Niners' injured reserve/designated for return player. Doctors have reportedly told coach Jim Harbaugh that Crabtree's recovery is going "great," and the 49ers still expect him to play late this season. In all likelihood, Crabtree won't be back in action until Week 11 or 12 at soonest. And he probably won't be his old self before 2014. Crabtree isn't worth a fantasy pick in re-draft leagues.

He also has areas of his game he needs to clean up. Call it game management, the stuff Alex Smith was good at. Kaepernick needs to improve his pre-snap reads – identifying the defense and choosing the correct plat at the line of scrimmage. He also needs to call the plays quicker. The 49ers had to burn far too many timeouts to prevent delay-of-game penalties. And Kaepernick needs to stop fumbling snaps when he's lined up under center. He fumbled nine times last regular season.

he did? the things I forget. :-)

the pre-snap reads and delay of games SHOULD work out by end of Pre-Season games. the fumbling part........hmmmm.........don't recall why he was fumbling?
