YT: Just ordered this attachment for my kettle, this looks like it could be fun and with this I can burn straight wood not charcoal.

I like that...I have a weber that lights the coals via propane. That removes the most difficult part of grilling. I always saw it as "easy as a gas grill, but ALL the flavor of charcoal. As for gas grills, might as well cook with the range indoors.

Yep you have the Weber Performer I have three Master Touch a WSM and old school kettle and plan to order the Summit Charcoal grill soon. I need to do some work on my old kettle, replace the ash shaker, JB Weld the legs in place, then it will be the kettle I use with the Santa Maria as I will be burning wood and not coal

If you burn straight wood on your weber, it will burn out the bottom. Yeah, I know there is a grate at the bottom but it will melt that.
You could put small chunks in but will need to reload contiually.
You could line the bottom with1 1/4" pavers. That will take care of your grill - mostly.
The other thing you could doinstaed, use a smoker tube. I have friends that can rival a traeger or santa maria pit with just a tube.
I would recommend buying 2 so you do not have to reload while hot!

Nahhh it won't melt it ou burn it out. at least not as fast as you might think. And again the Santa Maria will be used on an old beater kettle. If you put a base of lump coals, then add your wood it's fine. I have been cooking on Webers for 35+ years now and I can always find the basic kettle on the side of the road for free or at garage sales for $20.00. I also can place the cast iron grates from my stick burner in the bottom of the kettle

I never understood the need for a smoker tube and what's funny is people who use pellet grills are the ones using smoker tubes.

The ones using a smoker tube are those too poor, too tight or not as ingenious as you or I.

I never pictured you as a dumpster diver but to each his own.
I have an offset smokr that I picked up at a sale and modify until it works. It is recyclable when I am done with it.
I buy them off people who evision themselves smoking and then don't use it. The last one I "bought" lasted 14 years.
If this one lasts 14 years and I'm around to use it, I'll be fricken thrilled!

Not sure dumpster diver is the term I would use but hey if I see a Weber for cheap I grab them they can be rebuilt pretty cheap. A lot of people do not have the patience to work a fire nor do they know how to do it effectively so they buy a pellet smoker. Pellets are great for someone that wants to socialize or sleep while the food smokes. I have eaten off them they do alright for the most part

I couldn't agree more with your concept here. You choose what you value and that makes you happy. I'm less devoted (almost not at all actually) but I attribute that to not really being a foody. Heck, I love food but I'm no where near the foody line. Tons of people love food and pretend to be foodies, but the truth is.... they are just pigs.

If you devote yourself to a craft (even if you get it wrong) and take pride in doing it and enjoy life more just through trying to do it better, you've figured out something in life that most have not.

Perfectly said, I too am no foodie but I absolutely love cooking and without sounding like I am bragging I am pretty damn good. I am two years away from full pension and potential retirement, I told the wife when I retire I want to hone my cooking and BBQ skill even more. She laughed and said you are the only person I ever met that does full scale breakfast on a grill. But she get's it and she supports it, she even brings friends and family over, "Hey Dave is cooking yall come by the house".

"You are like seven of the strangest women I've ever met."

"You can't handles the truth."

Both from "A Few Good Men"

Here's another:

“Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? ...

"Life is like a box of Choco-Lates, you never do know what you gunna git"

I like that because it's mostly wrong. Anyone who pays attention can always spot the caramel. But most people don't pay attention and live life grabbing the maple crème that nobody ever wants.

I fixed my dishwasher last week. I screamed at it the whole time. The circulation pump was busted and fitting it in was totally moronic. Don't get me started with the clamps that when turned 1 millimeter too tight forced the connector apart (and would leak if not tight enough). My wife said "why put yourself through that". She has no clue I was enjoying myself.

For me, these type of missions are very satisfying. The extent of my dad's technical ability went as far as changing a light bulb. To be fair, he could paint well (inside, outside, ceilings, decks... everything).

I can fix anything. I can build anything. Literaly.
I was standing at a church bonfire with a friend (also very capable) and an older woman having a conversation about being able to do anything.
She pointed out "that's a real blessing" My friend silently nodded his head unsure of what to say.
After a moment of awkward silence, I replied, "It's "a curse" She was confused as my friend started chuckling.
I then pointed out, "when you can do everything, guess what you do?"
You end up doing everything!!!!!"

I can fix anything and then have to call an expert to repair what I fixed.

I'll be honest........I have very little construction ability. There's an *^ year old woman across the street that needed new railings on her driveway porch. My wife installed a complete set of rails and balusters and the step rails. She did such a great job, I'm going to Home Depot and buy the same stuff and she's going to do our driveway and front porches. She doesn't know it yet, but she's also going to do the back deck rails 12'x28' deck.

Funny you should say that... It's the position I'm at my job right now and I'm finally ready to quit (both being financially secure enough and exhausted from the lack of support and lack of rewards).

Give her my phone number. If you die, I'll marry her. I've got a lot of stuff that needs work here.....
