Why though? They had been outplayed in 5 (possibly even 6) of the first 6 games with him healthy

and the Soviets won how many of the first 5 games being outplayed? game breaker like that out of the lineup for game 7 and limited in game 8??? and canada wins each of those games by only 1?

CCCP won the Corsi and Fenwick battle, Canada won the series.

:D

Canada actually won the Corsi and Fenwick battle too. Almost every game.

Since "puck luck" was a clear factor there, in the same vein how do we know that Kharlamov would have had it in the last two games?

Like I guess I think of it like... if they were outplayed without Kharlamov and they were similarly outplayed with Kharlamov, why should the conclusion be that Canada won in the former scenario but would have been much more likely to lose the latter?

Re: 72 Series

I have two words for you: Josef Kompalla

He did his best to even things out once Kharlamov went down.

The narrative they supported was that the US ended Soviet hockey. I think that's accurate to a tiny degree, but that they were already on the downswing.

I had assumed that the narrative was that Tikhonov ended Soviet hockey. I'm not sure that that's accurate either, but it seems like a better hypothesis than the one they apparently had.

While this is just anecdotal, I have a good friend who grew up in the old Soviet Union who was about 5 or 6 during the 1980 Olympics. I once asked him about the loss, and he said basically "While my parents weren't hockey fans I had never even heard of it except in passing until we moved here to America. If it was a big turning point for the country it must have missed my neighbourhood."

As far as what ruined Soviet hockey? The same thing that ruined Soviet everything, either directly or indirectly... fucking communism.

The other ref in the '72 Summit Series for games 5-8 was Franz Badder - Together, they were collectively known as "Badder and Worse".

Seen it on ABC about a month ago.It was most interesting.BUT it was from the Soviet perspective, so you know they are not going to tell you that they kicked skates all the time, in that 1972 series. That's why Fergie told Clarkie to get Valeri. All in all it was a very good documentary.

Interesting series, perhaps the greatest international hockey games all-time.
