Amen to that Hawaiian...good to hear. Still in shock at the severity of stuff in Japan. Gosh. Thank God many of their big buildings are built specifically for this stuff in Tokyo. Haven't watched any news yet (don't get cable in my room) and honestly the few pictures I saw on weather.com were enough for me :(

I guess I shouldn't be whining about the 4 inches of snow we're expecting in Pittsburgh. Thoughts and prayers Nate....

That was my Facebook status...I've been complaining about the snow because I'm driving home today (or maybe tomorrow if the snow is bad), but that's clearly not a big problem in the world. Crazy weather going on right now though, with all the tornadoes, really odd snow storm that is traveling directly north, earthquake and tsunami...

waiting for some waves to hit the west coast, apparently.

here's something spooky: I read this article predicting it last week
Moonageddon: on March 19, our nearest neighbour will be at its closest since 1993 | News.com.au

those aerial views are absolutely unreal

that story is slightly freaky

the video of the people on the bridge seeking higher ground is just astonishing to me ... the emotions those people must have felt looking down and seeing cars/houses/boats/humans and general debris flowing underneath them all the while not knowing whether a bigger wave was going to envelope them ... god what that would have been like

Most recent numbers (it jumped a few hundred in about 15 minutes): 137 dead, 531 missing in Japan.

Hope everything is well, Nate! You're one of the first people I thought of when I heard about the quake (I don't know many people in Japan). How are things? I'm not in San Francisco at the moment but I heard the waves hit our beaches and a bunch of schools had a "Tsunami Day" as well as a bunch of roads being closed and they shut down our subway system that runs under the bay.

daylight has arrived and so far our island has not seen anything more unusual than a dramatic increase & decrease in tides, no large waves. no widespread damage as reported by CNN, mainland media.

tired as hell

Glad to hear there were no major problems for you.

yeah V, everything is ok here. some flooding damage around some coastal areas around the state, nothing major, no injuries or lives lost. I give a lot of credit to the evacuation system and our civil defense & authorities to to ensure the safety everyone here.

It was brutal to watch some of the footage last night of what went on in Japan. So much lives were lost right before our eyes.

The west coast had some damage as well not to sure on the extent. We are warned to stay away from the beaches and coastal areas for today due to the strong currents and tidal surges still happening.

I was up for most of the night, running off adrenaline. You never know what could happen, glad nothing did, better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

Peace out.

An estimated 6.6-magnitude earthquake has struck Nagano and Niigata as well

I'll be fine, we live far up inland out of the tsunami zones. unless its a 500 foot wave then we're fucked. But I have family that live along the beach that are evacuating for precautionary measures still unsure at this point if and when a tsunami will come. scary stuff.

hope they are safe......and everyone else around them

I know the first wave isn't the only one that hits, and it takes a while in between, but doesn't it take several hours for the tsunmai waves to stop or at least become safe?
