The report indicates the 38-year old Nylander will suit up with the Rochester Americans of the AHL until such time he's ready to return to the NHL.

I guess Rochester > Edmonton

Report: Capitals loan Nylander to Panthers

Can somebody explain to me how this works? Is this not Cap (no pun intended) Circumvention?

I think the TSN story will be corrected in short order, sbb, if this Craig Custance tweet is valid:

Also told that Nylander has been loaned to play in Rochester, but Panthers are NOT picking up his salary. Just a straight loan deal.

I take this to mean that the Caps are not getting any cap relief via this loaning of Nylander, however the Panthers expressed interest and the Caps just want him out of their organization.

i believe you can actually loan players through the AHL the canucks have done it in teh past where we took on some Dallas players. if they call him up then I guess it would have to be a trade and go through waivers both ways. he should still be property of the Caps but the AHL team gets his services. that being said if its for a trade isnt a "try out" like this kinda illegal to the CBA? BEWARE the penalties......

Thanks Dash, makes a lot more sense now.

Pierre LeBrun has tweeted the following:

FYI, Caps still on hook for Nylanders' $3M salary even though he's been loaned to Rochester. Panthers will pay him $100,000 AHL salary

Nothing like a 100 grand bonus to go to Rochester...Of course, I've never been to Rochester.

sbb, I think I'm wrong, from what I'm hearing/reading, although the Caps are still paying Nylander his $3 million, they do indeed get cap relief (it appears they just didn't want him with their minor league team/organization).

It will be interesting to see if the Oilers try a similar ploy with Souray.
