But at some point, you need your goalie to step up and steal the occasional game for you in the playoffs. Bryz didn't do that for the Flyers against the Devils and consequently, the Flyers failed to moved on.

i dont think he stole one in the traditional sense.. but i think there were a couple games in the pens series where his play won them the game.. if that makes any sense.. even though he gave up 4 and 5 goals in the two games the flyers had 8.. his play over fleury's was the difference.. both teams had a scoring chance every time any player touched the puck, regardless of where they were on the ice.. bryz made multiple huge/clutch saves in those games that fleury couldn't make

Thanks y'all.

I was genuinely curious how the F'ers felt about it.

It got put in my head when I overheard two guys in the lunch room talking about how the Jackets have all these former players in the playoffs still. Yes, they mentioned Carter.

Actually, it's how a rebuild/refresh should go. One team gets immediate dividends, the other gets more long term benefit. I just sincerely hope Jack Johnson is the latter.

I think both teams won. Carter and Richards are seriously perfect in LA. It's bizarre, but maybe they've matured a bit too. The Flyers got great stuff and are set for the future at every position but goalie :)

Come on now...

.891 GAA 2.78%
.899 GAA 2.52%
.834 GAA 4.63%

How bad do you think his numbers actually are?

I'll just say "consistency" and leave it at that. My team's goalie had a terrible postseason, but I'm not the least bit worried about him bouncing back. And I'm sure you're not worried either, but that contract ain't purty either.

Well yeah noone likes his contract, but I am a believer. Hoping for a much more defensive oriented team next year, possibly QB'd by Suter. :)

And for what its worth, the numbers I posted are actually Fleury's from his last 3 playoffs

I agree that MAF will bounce right back to his mediocre self.

I know sir, haha. Hence why I didn't bite. The past 2 years have come against some ridiculous powerplays that absolutely killed him. The guy is a winner. I'm seriously certain he can win more championships.

Sure he can - because he has played/does play on an excellent team. He just doesn't pass the eyeball test - his lateral is not spectacular, not a ridiculous glove, doesn't shut down the lower part of the net, doesn't play aggressive and take away angles. He doesn't do any of those poorly, but he's not stellar at any one either. He's finished the season in the top 10 in save percentage ONE time in the past 7 years. And what people always hung their hat on with him was that he was "clutch." No, he had a nice run over a small sample size, but it's averaged out now. He's just an average NHL goalie with average NHL stats - .909 career save pct (worse in the playoffs) and 2.68 GAA. Not a bad goalie, just an average one

Thank goodness, because imagine if the Pens had an amazing goalie. Life for the fans of the other teams in the East would suck.

Those moves seem like a net gain, especially as some of those young players mature and improve. But I wonder if the Bryz mess will more than offset those gains. Flyers' fans have to hope for a bounce back next year (which I don't think will happen with Bryz mental makeup) or the team is either (1) saddled with his salary and having to find another option or (2) forcedly playing the guy with the big contract.

It's funny b/c going into this past season, it seemed like the Flyers locked up that goalie they've been seeking but the forwards they acquired were a big question mark. Now the script is flipped.

not to me. anyone that watched the prior 2 playoff seasons for the yotes would know that bryzgalov has not been a good playoff goalie and hasn't been since 2007 with the ducks. what would be concerning to me is that his playoff numbers have been trending downward since 07.

imo his contract is going to haunt the flyers for years to come

Bryz has a fragile psyche. A goalie with a fragile psyche in the city of Philadelphia just doesn't mesh real well. Not to mention.... a goalie who is also being paid like a Vezina contender.

If the Philly fans just cut the guy some slack, I really think it would make a difference for him. That ain't gonna happen, though. You guys have been beating your heads against the wall since Hextall.

I really think Bryz bounces back next season. It's a pretty drastic change going from Phoenix to Philly both professionally and personally. He's had a year to get a feel for it, now he knows what to expect with the media, his family is settled in, etc.

ya.. we're pretty quick tempered haha.. i tried my best with him.. got a little angry around january, stopped acknowledging his existence in late february/march and kept that going until the pens series haha

i do think he can come back next year and be a more even keel goalie and put out some good efforts.. i think he started to get comfortable with the d-men and the philly media towards the end of the year, but even more than that, i think he got a little more used to how hockey is played in the eastern conference.. out west it's a little more wide open with a little less traffic, whereas in the east 80% of the goals are scored from mucking around in front of the net.. at least, that's the way i see it.. a lot of bryz's struggles early were with traffic in front of the net and deflections.. once he adjusted to that i think he got a lot better.. then it was just his lapses in focus that were costing the team (ie the pens series)

all east/west comparisons within comments above are strictly my opinion and could be broad generalizations because i watch approximately 75 more eastern games per year, than western

So they sign Quick to a big contract and then are forced to sign cheap depth players. Surely the concept I was getting at isn't that hard to imagine right?

All I'm saying is, a lot of things happen in the future that we don't foresee.

The Kings have a deep farm system. King & Nolan weren't even top 10 prospects & have contributed big time.

Remember the name Tyler Toffoli he's a RW for the Ottawa 67's.
Andrei Loktionov can take Stoll's spot on the roster next year.
Kyle Clifford seems to be doing fine.

On defense
Derek Forbert former 1st round pick
Jake Muzzin
Thomas Hickey former 1st round pick

All three are good prospects. That's not counting the youth on the roster with the likes of Doughty, Voynov & Martinez.

In goal
Jonathan Bernier former 1st round pick
Christopher Gibson 2nd round pick in 2011
Martin Jones
Jeff Zatkoff

There are others I'm not going to bother to mention. The Kings have depth to burn.

I just don't know that Bryz is a goalie that can honestly ever be mentally sound. Just some of the quotes he has, specifically about the fans and media, is interesting. I honestly think he was very unhappy in Philly. Sure he may be a little more settled in, but it just seems like the guy takes every comment personally, and in Philly that'll just eat you up. Heck, in most cities that'll eat you up. He had success with a few teams when NO ONE paid attention. Not close to the Philly attention at least. And people look to his 2007 numbers? He was the backup you know. Giggy was still starting then. He has the talent, and it'll be scary if he can put a solid head in combination with that.

I think the Flyers needed to tinker a little bit and they would have been repping the East. Flipping everything upside down set team chemistry back a year or two, imo.

Oh, and has anyone ever mentioned that your goalie sucks?:boink:
