Former Husker Johnson: Son choosing Iowa over Nebraska is about winning

Another punch in the nose for Husker fans. Another reason for Hawkeye fans to thumb their noses at their Big Ten rivals across Missouri River.

The roles have reversed in the quarter century since Clester Johnson was making big plays as the leading receiver his senior season at Nebraska in 1995, when the Huskers compiled the most dominant national championship season in the history of modern college football and Iowa squeaked into the final Top 25 poll.

Clester's son Keagan, a three-star wide receiver from Johnson's high school alma mater of Bellevue West in the Omaha area, announced he is choosing to play at Iowa over Nebraska on Wednesday. He'll be a senior this season and was ready to put recruiting behind him.

The father told KWSN's "Sports Talk with Craig & John"in a Wednesday interview that Keagan's decision had a lot to do with the last five years, when the Hawkeyes have averaged over nine wins per season and reached a bowl game in all of them, while the Huskers have averaged five wins and reached one bowl.

Iowa has beaten Nebraska in each of their last five matchups.

"At the end of the day, it comes down to winning," Johnson said. "This is not my Nebraska. It is not the same. They're not winning and not going to bowl games."

Stability had a lot to do with it, too. While Kirk Ferentz has been patrolling the sidelines in Iowa City for over 20 years, Scott Frost is the Big Red's third coach in the last five.

"(Keagan is thinking), do I want to be a part of it? When do I I think things will get going again (at Nebraska)? We don't know."

And Keagan didn't want to wait find out if the Huskers would start winning and if Frost and his staff will still be around the next five years.

No matter what, Nebraska still has Carter Lake, Iowa, surrounded.

Nebraska also lost one highly rated in-state recruit to Minnesota.

Nebraska's new coach has been there two years and had two losing seasons. Nebraska has had four losing seasons in five years.

Mike Riley left Scott Frost with a pile of crap. At least Bo Pelini left Mike Riley with talent because in 2016 the Bo Pelini seniors gave Mike Riley a 9-4 record. The Mike Riley seniors gave Scott Frost a 5-7 record.

If there is no football this year, Nebraska could be in a world of hurt. No chance to have a shot at a bowl game, which means Scott Frost will have to talk to recruits about "vision" and not have a chance to show progress. Good luck with that.

It could be worse, if there is a season and Nebraska does not qualify for a bowl game, all hell breaks loose.

A case of damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

Predictions
2020 Nebraska best season 8-4
2020 Nebraska worst season 2-10

my prediction, not going bowling, the final five games for Nebraska are pretty much all a guaranteed loss.
at Ohio State 100% guaranteed loss
at Wisconsin 100% guaranteed loss
at Iowa 99% loss, hmmm, maybe I will attend this game.
Penn State 99% loss
Minnesota 95% loss, if Nebraska has no shot at going bowling 100% loss, if Nebraska needs a win to go bowling, 90% loss

And that is why they play the game. Just as I know the sun will rise tomorrow, I have hope, until reality slaps me in the face.

Time to comeback to the Big 12..especially if SoCal comes as well

Nebraska will NEVER go back to the Big 12.

Nebraska's academic standing has only gone up since joining the B1G.

Nebraska's research grants from the NSF have only gone up since joining the B1G.

Nebraska is in 14th place in the B1G in R&D money, but going up. In the big 12, Nebraska would be third.

Nebraska will probably pass Iowa State in research dollars within the next three years. Iowa State is in second place in research R&D in the Big 12, behind Texas.

Since joining the B1G in 2011, Nebraska has increased their amount of R&D dollars more than EVERY school in the Big 12, that includes University of Texas at Austin. Nebraska increased $346,204,000 and Texas has only increased their haul by $224,887,000. Of course, texas started with a big number and it is hard to move the needle when it is a big number.

Nebraska R&D dollars are twice as much or more than; K State, OK State, West Virginia, TCU, and Baylor. Why be bogged down by poor research institutions, when you could join the pre-eminent research institutions that share.

Combining the B1G conference payouts and the R&D dollars has brought in since joining the B1G,

B1G conference payouts that Nebraska received from the B1G
June 2012 $14,000,000
June 2013 $15,400,000
June 2014 $16,900,000
June 2015 $18,700,000
June 2016 $22,000,000
June 2017 $26,000,000

$113,000,000 from conference payouts

Add that to the $346,000,000 increase Nebraska has had in R&D, Nebraska is averaging a $50,000,000 increase in R&D each year.

That is $449,000,000 in an increase in revenue since leaving the Big 12 and joining the B1G,

Divide that by 6 years, and that is $ 76,500,000 per year.

Conference payouts not used in calculation because the NSF database does not have numbers for 2018 yet. The unofficial numbers I have seen from an acquaintance are the number will be near $90,000,000 for Nebraska over their last year in the Big 12.

June 2018 $31,000,000 Nebraska's final year of not receiving full conference eligibility
June 2019, Nebraska received a distribution of $54,000,000 from the B1G for FY 2018.

in conclusion, as we know that it is all about money, Nebraska has brought in way more money by being in the B1G over the other nine schools in the Big 12. Nebraska has nowhere to go but up in reapjng financial rewards, whereas, if in the big 12, the amount of R&D dollars would be stagnating because of the association with quite a few lower echelon schools. In the B1G, nebraska is the one that everyone looks down on, but is noticing their improvements.

it's all good man, the school will make good money while the B16 feeds off the once proud carcass of a one time blueblood. Maybe then they will help vote you back to AAU status? I'm sure Texas would give you that vote..again
