Faulk had people to take the pressure off of him in the running game. LT was always the focal point of every defense. Faulk played one more year and only had 700 more total yards but 26 fewer TDs. Both were incredible blockers and Faulk is my #2 RB in history.
I love Payton as well...he's #3 in my book but again, I discount the era he played in. The players today are just bigger, stronger, and faster.
AP would be higher but he doesn't catch the ball much and he is not a great blocker.
Bo Jackson would be much higher if he did it longer...he's likely be #1 on my list.
Gale Sayers is an interesting discussion because he was fast even by today's standards but I don't put him close to the top five.
I discount Jim Brown's accomplishments more than anybody probably.
Barry was great but that's mostly just because he was fun to watch and a great runner but didn't receive and wasn't asked to block.
Emmitt I discount because he played so long and the last few years was just to get the record that Barry could have easily put out of reach...it just shows the difference in attitude of Barry and Emmitt.
As for Cowboy RBs, I know Dorsett was mentioned but if you look at Herschel Walker's stint with Dallas, he may have been there best.
Terrell Davis, Roger Craig, Thurman Thomas are also interesting discussions. I see all three similar.
I also forgot Dickerson who reminds me of Robert Smith. He was a tall, upright runner with blazing speed but honestly, I don't think much of Dickerson in today's game and his drug issues really ruined his career standing.
You are to kind Nos I would have penalized Gkekoa and melmaan for not following directions. It wasn't who wants to play but your name down on the list. I think they should draft 7th and 8th
What is this 8 man thing?? Haven't been on as much as I usually am.
You don't think much of Dickerson in todays game? His game would work in any era, not sure how old you are but if you were old enough to watch him play you wouldn't say that.
Herschel was the best College football player I have ever seen but Tony Dorsett was a better pro.
The reason I discount Barry is because if you were playing the Packers in the NFC Championship game and it was -10 degrees would you want Barry that day? I can list 40 RB's I would rather have that day.
I never get tired of defending Walter Payton, discount his era all you want but before you do check the teams he played on, it was a joke his QB's sucked more than any RB who's in the top 100 backs of all time, everyone knew who was getting the ball and he still kicked everyone's ass!!!
Faulk played one more year but look at that year, he didn't play much. I could be wrong but LT never really lead his team to a win come playoff time, he might be the greatest regular season running back of all time or at least top 3.
The other reason I think it is better to do a "now" draft is because you get a better idea with a more limited pool. Example, how many "great" rbs are there in the game today? Not many. You really have to strategize on what positions are a priority, and you get a good feel on how a particular owner would go about building a team.
Going back 35 years you have: Smith, Faulk, Tomlinson, Sanders, Petterson, Alexander, Holmes, Davis, Barber, James, Etc....
Everybody is gonna get a good regardless. Will be like that in most positions.
Sounds like we're not going to do the now draft, and it will be fun either way - so I'm just talking I guess.
I like the 1990-Present idea. You still get LOTS of great players and its not a done of work.
Actually I do remember Dickerson. He had a drug problem that hurt his career and considering how slender he was while being tall and his upright running style, the Robert Smith comparison is probably dead ass accurate. Dickerson would get killed. Also, the play that sticks out for me with Dickerson is when Darrell Green gave him a 20 yard head start and ran him down in 40 yards total.
Dorsett didn't cause Dallas to win 3 SBs...that goes to Walker.
I'd take Barry in any weather if you gave him a better supporting cast. He was the most fun player to watch in history but he suffered in Detroit.
Yet, his defense is still considered one of the best three in history. I'd say 00 Ravens, 13 Seahawks, and 85 Bears. Like I said, I love Payton and he's my #3.
Sorry but look at the surrounding talent Faulk played with. It was far superior to what LT had so "leading" is an interesting term. Faulk played with two HOF QBs...LT did not.
Just a thought...if more than 8 guys want to play, we could do co gm's again
