While Weber and Chara will make the highlight films with their big shots and bigger hits, Lidstrom's strengths are harder to fit into a 10-second reel. It's in the little plays he makes, how he outwaits guys for the puck, how he reads plays as they're still taking shape, how he keeps the puck in play with a swift move at the blue line

Ok, I'm done lobbying for now...

gonna be tough to convince any red wings fan that anyone else besides lidstrom deserves it. we've seen what the team is like without him, and it ain't that great. makes me dread the thought of him retiring.

the fact that the wings have made the playoffs every year that he's been on the team says a lot. yes, i know he's had some amazing talent surrounding him, but don't for a second believe that this is just a happy coincidence by association.

why do i say this? because you really can't appreciate the his greatness unless you watch him on a nightly basis. many of his greatest attributes are so subtle you would completely miss it unless you're looking for it. positioning, stick work, he's much more physical than anyone ever gives him credit for, i've never seen another defenseman where i feel if he's the dman back on a 2-1, he'll break it up EVERY time. he always makes the right play out of the zone, i mean ALWAYS. and you can say all you want that his offensive stats are a byproduct of his teammates, but i would say it the other way around. everyone else's offensive stats are a byproduct. his shot ALWAYS gets on net, which leads to great scoring chances for his teammates, his passing is perfect. his ability to stop the puck from getting out of the offensive zone (hand/eye coordination) is ridiculous. he is THE driving force behind the wings offense, everyone else on the ice can feel so comfortable trying to make plays because he's back there.

this may sound ridiculously stupid, but i'm telling you it's true that even with his 6 norris trophies, he is tremendously underrated.

i won't be pissed if weber wins, he is an awesome, awesome player and probably deserves to win, but to say that lidstrom is only listed or a serious candidate because of past achievements is inaccurate, and like i said, you will NEVER convince a wings fan otherwise.

He's really not... but I've been through this too many times to do it again. Discussing Nicklas Lidstrom is like "trying it out again" with my ex: It ends up with me being pissed off, unfulfilled, and probably right.
