Well, there goes that. I really have to question the decision not to upgrade the secondary during FA. These guys (along with the refs) lost us the Superbowl, they were our glaring weakness last season. It just baffles me that the only DB that we've signed is a back up FS.

Good plan Nnamdi, you already alienated yourself from teammates in Philidelphia by eating lunch in your car because you didn't relate to east coast people and wanted "me time"... so just dive in deeper into everything that doesn't satisfy your personality and comfort zone by signing with the Saints.

Ha, those poor saints... if philadelphia was outside of his comfort zone, boy is he going to be shocked by Louisiana.

Damn, if that is how he feels then good luck in the Bayou where their defensive scheme..well is non existent. You thought you had it bad in Phi, it won't be any better in NO.

Why because of last year? Saints hired Rob Ryan and Nmandi is very familiar with his schemes.

I think New Orleans will be leaps and bounds better than Philly. Philly fans are for the most part terrible. They claim to be great fans because they are obnoxious and loud, but in reality they are... obnoxious and loud. 49er fans have their own problems (knowing when to be loud and when to be quiet at a fucking playoff game) but Philly would be a terrible place to play. The fans and media in Philly love to bash players when they are not doing so well. It is fine to hold players accountable, but it is relentless and for the most part uncalled for. They turn on their own players so quick.

New Orleans has a far more relaxed media. As for the fans, embrace that community and they will love you forever. It helps if you play good too, but not nearly as bad as a place like Philly or Boston.

@mattbarrows: Asomugha-watch: The CB was in N.O. today, but head coach Sean Payton & GM Mickey Loomis were in Phoenix by early afternoon. Just saying...

NO might have less cap space than us so maybe we aren't out of the running just yet.

Just because he is familiar won't necessarily mean he will succeed. That is all I am saying...plus their defense doesn't have a pass rush which means they depend on the secondary that much more.

Sean and Loomis didn't even meet with Aso. Only dude Aso talked to was Ryan. The other guys went to the league meetings.

Seems strange they would talk a guy up if they are serious in signing him as you wouldn't want to give him leverage so I wonder if this is gamesmanship on their part to jack up the price for the 49ers.

Asomugha down to two options?
March, 19, 2013 1:02PM ET
By Tim Kavanagh | ESPN.com

Last week, a report from NFL Network analyst Akbar Gbaja-Biamila made it seem that the San Francisco 49ers were close to signing both Charles Woodson and Nnamdi Asomugha, with whom Gbaja-Biamila had played in Oakland previously. However, several days have passed since then with no contract for either man in San Francisco. And in the case of Asomugha, there has been significant interest from at least one other team.

Namely, the New Orleans Saints, as we learned Monday. Reportedly, Saints GM Mickey Loomis and HC Sean Payton weren't around when Asomugha dropped by for a visit, but his old DC from Oakland, Rob Ryan, was. Nevertheless, Payton is excited about the possibility of adding a player that at one time was renowned as one of the league's top cover corners.

"It happens all the time in our business where a player has success and then maybe goes through a period of time where he doesn't," Payton explained, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune, from the NFL owners meetings. "He had company in Philadelphia in regards to the struggles they had, and for two years we didn't see the same player we saw in Oakland for so many years. But that happens all the time. I think for us, you look at the body of work and look at what motivates the player and what he's excited about. I'm anxious to see how this unfolds."

The Saints have already added Keenan Lewis this offseason, but if they believe Asomugha can help them get back to the ranks of the league's Super Bowl contenders, there's no reason to think that the presence of Lewis would prevent them from adding Nnamdi as well.

Here's ESPN Insider's Field Yates on what Asomugha could do for New Orleans:

Field Yates
Key FAs who can shift balance of power

"There's an element of buyer beware on Asomugha, as he's not the elite cornerback that signed with Philadelphia during the 2011 NFL offseason, but he's also a better player than what he showed in two seasons with the Eagles. For the 31-year-old, it's about fit. He has excellent size and is capable as a man-to-man cornerback who can disrupt an opposing receiver's route before it even gets started with his physicality. That's part of what allowed him to excel in Oakland, where for five seasons he played for Rob Ryan, now the Saints defensive coordinator. Will New Orleans run a carbon copy of what the Raiders did under Ryan's direction? It's too soon to tell, but Ryan understands the strengths and limitations of Asomugha's game, a critical element in maximizing his output. The Saints defense was historically poor in 2012, but the return of head coach Sean Payton and a defensive turnaround would vault them back into the tier of NFC contenders."
