It’s a discussion that needs to start with the panic of pulling Sanchez with 38 pitches and 2.1 innings and then not using Wagner or Lorenzen to give you 3 innings. Why are those guys even on the roster if they can’t pitch that spot? But when you get to that point, Kimbrel catches 6-7-8-9 of a light hitting top heavy lineup. If you can’t pitch him there can you even pitch him at all?!?!? He did pitch 24 pitches yesterday and was touched. If the argument is he can’t be used…it was almost guaranteed he would be used when you have a quick hook for the starter.

The whole operation lost their playoff edge. Maybe they were reading their own press clippings and everybody having the Phillies auto advancing after 2 games.

It didn’t work out today but I think most managers nowadays would have handled the pitching changes similarly to Thomson insofar as they would have tried to avoid using Walker or Lorenzen in the first 9 while the game’s close. They would rather ride the overall hot hands in short relief work as hard as they can.

As an impartial observer, I think it sucks watching so many of the same relievers used consecutive days. It would be nice to see no more than one scheduled off day per playoff series to give less incentive to the quick hooks and avoidance of less elite long relief options.
