Phil’s take 3 of 4 from the Padres.
We laugh but the Padres look like they're gonna jump up a ways I feel like they make the playoffs
Just gut feeling, one of the teams is the Cubs so meh to them. But yeah that's a tough scheduleStill 4 back and 4 teams to jump with this gauntlet coming
4 vs LAD
2 @ SEA
3 @ AZ
3 vs BAL
4 vs AZ
3 vs MIA
3 @ MIL
3 @STL
4 vs SF
3 vs PHI
3 @ HOU
3 @ LAD
The final 12 are a breeze. But they need a minor miracle to survive the upcoming onslaught. Their best hope is the play a lot of the teams they are chasing.
That 6-18 record in one-run games may be what dooms them. They've underperformed their pythag by 8 games. They "should be" 62-47.
They went 22-31 in May and June despite having a +30 run differential.
Yup Padres have the underlying numbers and obviously talent to overcome and make playoffs. But I think this may be too big a hole with that schedule.
They will have to get consistent immediately.
Star studded team, for sure. Confusing why they can’t seem to get it going in the right direction.
I am wondering if their GM is canned at the end of the season. They are depleting their farm and have mortgaged their future.Star studded team, for sure. Confusing why they can’t seem to get it going in the right direction.
And the general rule throughout history is that 1-run games is a direct result of coaches (3-run games are a result of the front office). But Melvin is a HIGHLY respected manager. Is his respect ill-placed or is there another variable? What's crazy about the one-run games record is that they probably have the best closer in MLB. It's not like they've had some shitty closer-by-committee.
I think what the Padres have proven over the last 20 years or so is that building your core from external pieces just doesn’t work. Even the ‘90s Yankees had a CORE of internal pieces. Sure, they added HUGE external pieces, but they were not the foundation pieces from the getgo. They were complimentary pieces added to an already establish, self made foundation.I am wondering if their GM is canned at the end of the season. They should have done what the Cardinals did and start trading away pieces.
They keep trying the same thing over a d over again and simply get a flash in the pan.I think what the Padres have proven over the last 20 years or so is that building your core from external pieces just doesn’t work. They...just did get it going in the right direction. Can they keep it going with the brutal schedule coming is the question.Star studded team, for sure. Confusing why they can’t seem to get it going in the right direction.
Bautista and Doval laugh at your insolence (ok he's been pretty good this year...not Bautista good though)What's crazy about the one-run games record is that they probably have the best closer in MLB. It's not like they've had some shitty closer-by-committee.
I’m starting to come around on your step out about the Padres. They’re only 4 back of the last wildcard with a ton of baseball left. The NL playoff race is crazy. Counting the Brewers who are only a half game up on the Reds you have 8 teams competing for the 3 Wildcard spots plus the central division. Gonna be a fun finish to the season.They...just did get it going in the right direction. Can they keep it going with the brutal schedule coming is the question.
I think of it as 7 teams fighting for 3 wild cards.I’m starting to come around on your step out about the Padres. They’re only 4 back of the last wildcard with a ton of baseball left.
