""Harper hit 34 homers in 2018. All of the outfielders currently on the Giants roster have combined for 20 career homers.""

This cracked me up when I read it.

Pads are the team to beat
The Dodgers will and should be favorites to win the West this season, the Padres could make it interesting now. Their rotation will probably hold them back with a lot of inexperienced starters, but they have a lot of talented arms for 2019 and beyond.

he certainly makes them better, but they're still probably not any better than Arizona or Colorado let alone LA.

Padres could be the team to beat in a few years... if their farm system ever translates, that is.

Arizona isn't going to do squat. Pads probably win more games.

Pads have no pitching. That will be their downfall.

If the Pads sign Keuchel and then trade one or two of their studs for Bum (and maybe Smith/Watson), they could be for real.

What I did like about this signing, even though he is going to the enemy, was that it shows that the owners and not the players are back in charge.
Both Harper and Machado, with their gigantic egos, thought the marquee teams would be knocking down their doors to throw money at them. I love the way the owners stood up and Machado, at least, was forced to go to a doormat team to get them money he wanted instead of going to a winner like Boston, New York or the Cubs and now must endure a loser's situation with a long haul back to respectability. I love it!
I hope the same happens to Harper and he has to go to a doormat like the Giants :-)

2019 ZiPS Projections – San Diego Padres

The pitching still projects to suck, but the assemble of position players looks pretty good. There are some intriguing arms on the way, though I still think 2020 is a more likely year for them to contend.
