Matt Barrows:

49ers will release Brandon Jacobs. Giants' ouster from the playoffs likely made that an easier decision.

Mike Garafolo:

Did get this confirmed - any player waived on 12/29 or after can't be reassigned to a team that claims him until after the Super Bowl.

In other words, Brandon Jacobs was getting cut today whether the Giants made the playoffs or not. Niners knew what they were doing.

I'm sure Jacobs acted like a douche, but the Niners probably screwed him as well. Niners wanted the quality depth, but I'm guessing they assured him a lot more action than he ended up getting.

Good teams need guys willing to sit and do nothing until there are a few injuries, most players don't want to be that guy.....and that definitely goes for players winding down trying to get another big contract.

He was a total ass clown. Ljames has looked good anyway and seems he is 1 tackle away from housing a long TD

Jacobs was good insurance when the team probably assumed they were going to cut Dixon, but I can't imagine Baalke thinking Jacobs would do anything on special teams, and his character has always been that of a teenager, so unless the FO had an office pool on Gore getting injured, Jacobs was a ridiculous signing.

I mean Christ, Jacobs couldn't even help SF scheme against the Giants. (Or maybe he did and that's why SF lost...)

I was hoping Jacobs would be a physical presence in the playoffs, but I never really liked the signing. Good riddance at this point. I don't feel that bad for Jacobs. He had to know that Gore was our guy. Didn't know we'd add LMJ, but that wasn't what was holding him back. If he had paid any attention last year, he would have known that Hunter was promising and a better complement for Gore.

Is this really a smart move? If Gore or James get hurt we will be down to Dixon as the only backup. I'd rather have a veteran like Jacobs in that situation.

They Tebowed him like Rex Tebowed Timmy. ;) :L Made him feel he was the backup and then he was passed over when the starter got benched. Ironically, we made Alex feel he was a starter and passed over him when the starter (Alex) got healthy. (It would have been more reciprocally ironic if Sanchez had been injured as opposed to being benched.)

James has looked good in spurts lately but he goes down way to easily for my taste.

Jacobs was terrible and if Gore or James were hurt, I'd rather have Dixon. Not only can he contribute on special teams, but he can run better than Jacobs outside the tackles. Jacobs didn't show that he could do anything this season, all we needed him to do was get yards in short yardage situations and he couldn't even do that, plus you don't want a malcontent on the team during the playoffs. Good riddance, I say.
