Why not? If you can spend it on some major talent that will allow you a frontloaded contract and be around for a while that's great, but if not, you have to spend almost to the cap. Why not do it on a contract that has no dead money?
Because trying to build a winning team thru FA has never worked.Spending buttloads on one FA rarely works.

It hasn't even worked for Denver with Manning. Yet, anyways. In basketball, it worked for Garnett and LeBron, but not for Shaq/Kobe/Malone/Payton combo. But basketball is different than football.

Or the Kobe/Howard/Gasol/Nash team from a year ago? Though the Lakers seem to have horrible luck with building these super teams only to watch all of them go down to injury.

The Niners need to pull the trigger on a trade for Revis. The ONLY risk involved is 16 million dollars. That's nothing compared to the reward of possibly landing the missing piece of a Super Bowl winning defense.

And? They are obligated to fill the majority of the cap. The money will be spent, and they will not be competitive particularly soon. What's the harm of a deal with no dead money that they can shed whenever they want?

Wouldn't that be awesome if Revis got cut and 49ers offered him the $6M we saved from Carlos Rogers and he took a short term deal?

Double that.

No point in trading for him by any team. Everyone knows the Bucs will cut him so just let them and then sign him to a cheaper deal. Revis is not getting 16m a year from any team. We could come in and offer him 8-10 million along with being a key piece to a Super Bowl caliber defense. I don't think any team would offer him over 12m though.

Sometimes guys turn down more money from other teams to play for a better team. Revis has never done anything to show that he is that kind of guy though.

In the extremely rare instances where players play for less than they could get elsewhere, the difference is always negligible. I'm not concerned about getting him for like 3% under his actual market value; I'm concerned about him maintaining his level of play if the Niners acquired him.

Now that he is cut we should see what he wants. Think about with the money we save from the safety spot, letting brown and rogers go should give us around 8 million to sign Revis and not affect our salary cap too much because Revis would be taking over what we have lost.

This would be Big for the 49ers if we landed him.

Other news seattle losing Tate was Big.

Revis won't be a niner. Don't get your hopes up. Would love to see him here, but it's not Baalke's way of doing things.
