This whole thing is a joke. The Devils, like very other team, had to submit the contract to the league for approval. Isn't it the league's job to make sure contracts are OK within current labor standards?

In this case it wasn't. The league clearly stated this before the Devils executed day 1 of this contract. The Devils gained no advantage through this whole process. In fact they may have suffered by being in limbo for over a month.

I can see no logical reason for this penalty.

However the bolded word and Bettman are pretty much polar opposites.

Until the New Jersey Devils are put on trial for Snooki-associated war crimes against my television (and subsequently my virility), no punishment is enough.

Burn them! Burn them!

This is bullshit. The contract was approved. I can't really think of a precedent for this in "real life".

Let's say I go to city hall to get a building permit, and they tell me to fix some issues with it because it's against building code. Then when I submit the revised up to code proposal, they tell me it's good, and approve it... do they then fine me, and come to my house and steal my dog?

Brodeur should have his right arm amputated for these heinous acts.

you are on a car trip with your family, and your brother is putting his hands in your face, making that 'eeeeeeeeeeeee' sound, but he's not doing anything wrong, because he's technically not touching you. After about 300 miles of this, you haul off and punch him in the nose.

The Devils are getting fined for the first contract, that they lost in abritation.
I was saying if the Devils had submitted a contract that the league liked the 2nd time the fine may not have been as harsh.
To use the home inspection analogy. If the inspector says fix these things and you put a box over them to hide them you most likely won't pass inspection again. However the inspector doesn't want to drive out there again so he says, if you slip me a C note, I'll pretend I didn't see that. However; I am going to nail you for the previous infraction so my boss will think I am doing my job.

Yes, but in the landmark 1982 case Ronnie Johnson v. Billy Johnson, Judge Papa Johnson ruled that because of Billy's constant antagonizing, he was "asking for it", and both parties were sentenced to keeping their hands on their own sides of the armrest.

It's still a tough sell when everyone in the neighborhood knows that the inspector looked the other way when Old Man Thompson used asbestos drywall last year in his bathroom remodel.
