i think if they had chosen the fine, or too take picks away would have been fine, or at most taking away the 3rd with the fine.

the 1st combined with that is too much.

I said too much and am a fan of an opponent in the Devils' division, so, you know...

When it comes down to it, the Devils didn't step that far out of line given the precedents set, and their punishment should reflect that. The league practically dared a team to do this. A third round pick and no fine would have sufficed nicely.

Since the fine doesn't count against the cap, I will be a typical west coaster and say it was a fine fine.
I will also say that if the Devils had submitted a second contract that the league liked, there would have been no fine.
The Devils thought they had dodged a bullet and losing a first round pick is tough. But since the Devils can choose the year it could be a very low 1st rounder. Unless they start sucking real bad for a long time ;)

Harsh punishment for doing something the league let other teams get away with and wasn't technically illegal. They must have agreed on this penalty already, otherwise the Devils would have a pretty tight lawsuit to file.

I agree with Dave.
yes it's steep, but it could have been much worse (if the hit counted against the cap).
giving NJ a choice on the draft pick over the next 4 years is a bit of leeway as well.

I believe if they appeal, the appeal goes in front of the NHL BoG. in other words, the 29 other GMs.
And it is in their best interest to penalize NJ, of course.

I'm no CBA expert but it makes absolutely no sense that the NHL can punish a team for a contract that they approved. So I vote it is too harsh.

I voted perfect. They tried to circumvent the cap. The fine doesn't mean anything because it doesn't count against the cap. They can decide which 1st round pick they lose in the next 4 years. My guess is it will be in the 2011 draft because it's considered to be a weak draft. Plus the Devils will probably finish in the 20 to 30 range.
