I think most can agree that Boston-montreal is a fabulous rivalry. I would think, though I don't stay up till the wee hours to confirm that the in state California rivalries are excellent because those teams are all very good right now. Chicago-St. Louis, as someone else mentioned, is tough. Detroit-Toronto would be nasty if Toronto didn't suck and Detroit wasn't.....well. never mind that. Toronto-montreal is pretty good stuff even though they are both kinda lame. Quebec-montreal was a blood feud back in the day and the fact that Florida, Tennessee, Arizona and North Carolina have NHL teams and Quebec City doesn't is good enough reason to give Gary Buttman the full Mussolini treatment.

Historical would definitely be Habs vs. Bruins. Pittsburgh and Philly is a good one too. All those teams are pretty good (or better) right now, so those are pretty active rivalries too.

Right now Chicago vs. LA is pretty hot, just because of the recent success of those teams.

I should have mentioned Philly-Pittsburgh. Those games are always entertaining.

Since you are from Iowa, I am going to suggest the Wild as an NHL team.
Their AHL team plays in Des Moines and you could see some of the young guys cheaper than an NHL game.
