Speaking of the Edmonton - Detroit game tonight, a Russian ref will be one of the zebras tonight.

Yevgeni Romasko called his last KHL game between Salavat Yulayev Ufa and SKA St. Petersburg (3-1) on 26th January, soon after his 33rd birthday.

Few knew then that it would be his farewell game in Russia, but a few days later Romasko was back to work in North America. In a few hours’ time, he is set to take to the ice in Detroit for a game between the Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers, an assignment that will make him the first Russian referee in history to call an NHL game.

It’s a historical milestone that’s been years in the making. For Romasko, his journey to the NHL began when he landed in North America in late 2014, officiating a couple of AHL games in November and December before returning to Russia.

But the NHL’s officiating department wanted him back, and the promise of a possible assignment in the world’s top hockey league was irresistible. Romasko grew up playing hockey as a defenceman, and played a couple of games in the second-highest Russian league for his hometown team THK Tver before changing to officiating. He worked himself up and reached Russia’s top league during the KHL’s inaugural season in 2008/2009 where he has officiated in 231 games.

Russian ref makes history

Isles go down thanks to David Booth's 3rd goal in 3 games. BBB takes a large gulp from his Jameson's bottle.

Gardiner gives the puck away in his own end, as is tradition, and Bernier robs JT. Then a 3-on-1 and Bailey gives Bernier a gimme. What the fuck, Islanders.

Niemi is having a really solid night so far. It's almost as if he's playing for his next contract or something.
