Lifelong Cynic
I think it's just a bit of a mis-guided way of showing enthusiasm for the future.
The horrible-ness of the team was no secret coming into the season and everybody just assumed they would finish last. Then Arizona and Edmonton both showed a greater degree of suck than anyone expected and the fans in Buffalo started to get nervous that they'd endure all of this and still potentially miss out on a guaranteed McEichel.
What we saw last night was something of a sigh of relief from the fans because the loss last night more-or-less locks up dead last.
For the season though they're still pulling 97.2% home attendance though, which I think says a lot about the overwhelming majority of the fans.
