Ovechkin scores his first ever goal on friend and countrymen Semyon Varlamov to put the Caps ahead 2-1 at the end of the 2nd period.

This game is too close though. Caps have been dominating and lead the shot count 32-14 after two periods. Varlamov has been spectacular tonight - he's single-handedly kept the Avs in the game.

Yeah, he couldn't stay healthy, so I understood the move. But I always thought he was one of the 3-4 most talented goalies in the league and figured as soon as he left his health would work itself out.

Of course, if he stayed, he would have missed most of the last few seasons.

Caps get the 2-1 win. A little flat in the 3rd, but Holtby came up big.

This team has earned at least a point in 17 of their last 18 and we sit just two back of Pitysburgh and 3 back of the Isles. Didn't think I'd say that six weeks ago.

The boys are playing some great hockey.
