The point is Clemons was better than Irvin at all of the above. Irvin spent the game being engulfed and clearly it was a major downgrade for Seattle. Just like what I saw from RJF when Justin was out.

Irvin was nonexistent yesterday, he got no pressure and obviously wasn't effective against the run. Clemons could at least pressure the passer.

Prior to last year (right after the loss to the NYG), I had no idea the Niners had a losing record in NFC Championship games. I became a fan in 1987. Let's hope we get a step closer to .500 after next Sunday.

ESPN Stats and Info:

Colin Kaepernick completed six of 11 passes at least 15 yards downfield, including 3-of-3 and a 20-yard touchdown when targeting Michael Crabtree. Crabtree has caught a touchdown pass on such throws in three of his past four games, and has been utilized downfield much more in Kaepernick's eight starts this season, compared with Alex Smith's nine starts. --Kaepernick has completed 53.8 percent of his throws at least 15 yards downfield this season (including postseason), which is second in the NFL (min. 50 attempts).

NEXT LEVEL: The 49ers ran a season-high 34-of-75 (45 percent) plays out of the pistol set Saturday, while averaging 6.9 yards per play. Frank Gore had 16 rushes and a season-high 87 yards out of such sets, tied for the third-most rushes in pistol sets by a player in the past three seasons.

The 49ers sent standard pressure against Aaron Rodgers on all but two of his dropbacks, and put him under duress or sacked him on 11 of his 43 dropbacks. Rodgers was limited to 2-of-9 passing for 13 yards on such attempts after recording a league-high 80.1 Total QBR (among qualified quarterbacks) in such situations during his first 17 games.

How do the receivers and corners match up? Cornerback Carlos Rogers had another Pro Bowl season for the 49ers. He was beaten for 55 completions on 90 attempts for 575 yards and three touchdowns. Tarell Brown started on the other side and gave up 53 completions on 96 passes for 722 yards and only one touchdown. The third corner is Chris Culliver, who surrendered 39 completions on 75 attempts for 490 yards and four touchdowns while playing 64 percent of the snaps during the regular season. Ryan might go after Culliver. The Falcons attack with Pro Bowl-caliber receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White and future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. Falcons cornerbacks Dunta Robinson and Samuel only gave up a combined five touchdowns, but they were vulnerable to yardage. Samuel was beaten for 39 completions on 74 passes for 606 yards, while Robinson gave up 47 completions on 85 attempts for 738 yards. Niners coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't care much for stats -- his fantasy football is winning games. Crabtree is his main receiver, with 85 catches for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns. Randy Moss was a role player, with 28 catches for 434 yards. Vernon Davis is one of the most talented tight ends in football, but his numbers were down -- he had 41 catches for 548 yards and five touchdowns.

NFL playoffs -- NFC finalists have been vindicated - ESPN

Not a bad year by the 49ers CBs, seemed like the 49ers gave up a lot of passing TDs. They must have pinned a lot of those on Whitner.

I'm always interested in seeing how different websites' numbers compare.

Rogers (ESPN) - 55 rec on 90 att, 575 yards, 3 TDs
Rogers (PFF) - 68 rec on 97 att, 615 yards, 3 TDs

-----

Brown (ESPN) - 53 rec on 96 att, 722 yards, 1 TD
Brown (PFF) - 53 rec on 90 att, 719 yards, 0 TDs

-----

Culliver (ESPN) - 39 rec on 75 att, 490 yards, 4 TDs
Culliver (PFF) - 36 rec on 73 att, 471 yards, 4 TDs

-----

Samuel (ESPN) - 39 rec on 74 att, 606 yards, ? TDs
Samuel (PFF) - 41 rec on 77 att, 596 yards, 2 TDs

-----

Robinson (ESPN) - 47 rec on 85 att, 738 yards, ? TDs
Robinson (PFF) - 64 rec on 97 att, 835 yards, 4 TDs

-----

The biggest differences would be: that

PFF has 13 more receptions tagged to Rogers and 7 more attempts than ESPN's numbers. (Brown and Culliver's numbers are close).

Samuel's are close.

VERY big difference on Robinson's receptions allowed and attempts against between ESPN and PFF's numbers (17 rec difference and 12 attempts difference).

Also, it says in the ESPN article that between Samuel and Robinson they have allowed 5 TDs. According to PFF, they have attributed 6 against them.

In other news, Harbaugh said David Akers is “our kicker.” Billy Cundiff challenged Akers for that role the past two weeks, and he remains on the roster for now.

– Rather than waste one of four postseason roster moves by releasing Billy Cundiff, he’ll remain on the roster with David Akers, and Harbaugh noted that “David’s our kicker.”
