12 days t' go...

Say Alex got hurt LAST year instead of this year, and Kaepernick had to play in the NFC Championship game. Do you think he would've won it as a rookie?

I'm gonna say yes.

This, and I'll see your "less likely" and raise you one "we would have got slaughtered"! I don't think Kaepernick was even close to being ready for that stage last year.

I don't think we would've won with CK last season if he had to go in for Alex if he got hurt.

CK wasn't ready and I don't think the offense was ready for CK either due to the lack of offseason from the lockout.

I think it would have been tough for him to have played worse than Alex did in that game. All he needed was a first down, and he couldn't get it.

I think if Kaep played the Giants game, I think we would have won. BUT, I'm not sure Kap would have won the the Saints game

Alex Smith in last years NFC Championship

PASSING

12-26
196 yards
2 TDs
0 Int
3 sacks for 18 yards

RUSHING

6 carries
42 yards

I think if Ginn Jr wasn't injured, 49ers would have won. The 2 turnovers on special teams hurt 49ers way more.

slaughtered??? really?? Alex Smith barely did anything that game.

He didn't do anything in the second half, but he also didn't do anything negative. Seriously, scoring two TDs to Davis is not "barely doing anything," first downs even when not on third down still count, and when the yards go to TEs it still counts. So I would say he did nothing in the second half, not barely anything all game. Either way it wasn't good enough. I think the people that are saying it would be the same or worse with Kaep are saying there might have been a rookie moment. Alex was ineffective to put it nicely in the second half, but he wasn't making rookie mistakes. Maybe if Kaep made a rookie mistake the fumble wouldn't have happened.

That being said, I won't say it would have been worse. I'm just saying we don't know. I can't assume it would go well, but Kaep has done better than expected this year (though it's more understandable because he had more time to learn).

It's a team game and we would have won with perhaps with one more first down in regulation, who knows? That's not too much to ask.

He was 11-17 for 193 yards to non-WRs. 11.4 yards and 2 TDs. That's not great but that's not nothing. He needed more to WRs, obviously, but I would focus on the 196 total yards and the third downs, not who it went to. We had 15 first downs, the Giants had 20. 10 points were basically because of the ST fumbles. So the defense (obviously not Smith) would have won that game if not for KW's mistakes. Smith wasn't good enough to overcome the first fumble. No one could overcome the second, obviously - he just could have prevented it if we scored in OT on the previous possession or earlier.

I think if we went into both games as the starter, than yes, we could have won last year. But depending on when, if Smith got injured, I'd have expected the same as the first St. Louis game - an adjustment period - that was reasonable. But it would be hypocritical of me to say that I believe we *could* win the Falcons game with Smith if the gameplan helped us not start the game with two three-and-outs, but then with the other side of my mouth say that Kaep with no experience last year couldn't have been used in a winning way if he started. In other words, an inexperienced Kaep last year (not last year) is equal to an experienced Smith this year. This year, Kaep at ANY experience level is better than Smith.
