We are currently in a 'no contact' dead period for football recruits. It ends Jan 15. Texas will have a new coach shortly before the dead period ends. Get ready for an extended search and even more rumors.
Just go back to the selection of Patterson as AD. A week before he accepted the job, he wasn't interested.

My thought is that the main targets of the coaching investigation are already established. The decision may have already been made. In fact, I expect it has.
Announcing the next coach in a timely manner is, actually, more important than announcing a new Pope in a timely manner. Recruiting is very important, and getting the old or new assistant coaches settled is important.
There is only one reason, in my opinion, the AD would wait to announce the new coach. Otherwise, we would have already snaked a coach from a lesser tier team currently scheduled to play in a minor bowl.
The conclusion is as follows: The next coach at Texas is currently scheduled to play in a BCS game:
So, in order of descending likelihood,I believe the next coach at Texas will be:
1a. Briles, 1b. Dantonio, 3. Shaw, 4. Fisher [highly unlikely IMO]

LMAO!!!!

Not sure if the Gruden rumors are true, but man that'd be a huge hire. Gruden developing QBs, i don't think we'd miss out on any more heisman winners.

Gruden would be a good pick for someone who needed to kick start their recruiting. Texas doesn't need that.

Texas just needs someone who can develop the players they get in all positions and put the pieces together to play good fundamental/disciplined football.

There are quite a few of those types of coaches out there. They're not coaching blueblood programs, yet still find a way to coach up their 2 and 3 stars to 9 or 10 wins.

It's my opinion that the next HC at Texas will be a surprise. Of course, since just about every current and not current HC is being named as a potential replacement for Mack, it won't be a surprise to some.

Why has nobody not mentioned Jimmy Johnson? He grew up in Corpus Christi.

Why would he take a massive pay cut to work harder and longer?

I was with you on the first part, then you completely lost me on the second.

Texas Longhorns hire search committee for new football coach - ESPN

Included in the group tasked with finding Mack Brown's successor are two members of the UT System Board of Regents, Steve Hicks and Robert Stillwell, as well as former Regent Robert Rowling. They're joined on the committee by UT professor Michael Clement, U.S. federal judge Ricardo Hinojosa, former Exxon Mobil vice president Charles Matthews, Capital Royalty chairman Charles Tate and Pamela Willeford, former U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and former chair of the Texas Higher Education Coordinator Board.

A fucking committee? Now there is some pure comedy.
Texas would be better off with 1 man conducting the search.
Too many opinions in the room with this committee.

Too many people means too many leaks, which means too much publicity, which will end up with too many hurt feelings.

I would not mind your old coach at Utah State.. I like Anderson. I would take him over a lot of more well known candidates.

Most schools assemble some sort of Ad Hoc hiring committee. That is not unusual.
In fact almost all high level careers have multiple individuals involved in the hiring decision.

It would be unduly risky otherwise to put a likely 6 million dollar expense and 140 million dollar asset in the hands of one person.

Give one guy the ultimate YES/NO power. That is acceptable.
But by all means use a committee to find the best possible candidate.

And, Jon Gruden is an asshat for just throwing his name into the ring for no reason it seems.
Everyone else at least politely refused to comment.
And nobody else but Gruden voluntarily added their name.

I would go after Bill Cower before Gruden.

He coaches Wisconsin. I'm a Nebraska fan.

I agree he's a good coach though and what I was referring to regarding what Texas needs to hire.

Edit: NVM, I see I have Utah St as a favorite team. :L

It's supposed to be interpreted as "Why N U?" As to why keep Bo Pelino?

From what I've heard, Patterson will make the decision. The committee will only give recommendations.

I've been avoiding most of these threads as this is becoming too much of a circus for my liking. However, if we are being serious here:

I love the idea of Gruden. I know some will disagree with me, but he seems perfect.

1) Super Bowl experience,
2) Can coach our qb's,
3) I think kids will want to play for him = recruiting

I think recruiting is a question. He should do well on the recruiting trail. I question if he would actually want to put in the time recruiting. Basically it is not a question of "if", but will

Is the University of Texas going NFL?

A team is comprised of more than a QB.

Texas needs no help recruiting.

My thoughts exactly. He may look at it as a new challenge but I'm not sure he'd want to put in that much work when he doesn't have too. He strikes me as an "NFL guy" and could see him back in the NFL before I could see him in college imo. It'd be interesting to see what he could do though.
