If they get the puck on net any way and get some goals that way, it will loosen up the opposing defense and then they can start to make some of those pretty plays they're accustomed to making
It's true, if all you do is pass the damn puck around the perimeter and through the neutral zone, you're just going to turn the puck over a lot and never score. Then to make matters worse, the other team is storming your zone with possession. They need to either drive hard to the net with the puck or shoot it there with traffic, much like the Coburn goal. And if you can't skate the puck into the damn zone, dump and chase it relentlessly, but do it aggressively and with speed.
The power play is a perfect example. We pass the puck around endlessly until we finally take a shot that either gets blocked or goes wide, then the other team recovers the rebound and clears immediately. It's fucking sad.
