Now that the league is going to crack down on "spinning" the ball, dancing, and saluting after making a play (TD's are exempted I hear), someone better drill it into Sydney Rice's head in practise and pre-season games.

Rice is easily the biggest offender of the spinning the ball rule. He does it constantly and I wince every time because I keep thinking he'll get flagged. Now it looks like he will if he keeps doing it.

Looks like the NFL back tracked a bit and clarified that they will only flag a player when it's directly at an opponent.

Here is a tweet from Brian McCarthy who handles PR for the NFL:

"to clear up bad info re: td celebrations like military salute/spinning ball: only flagged if player does it directly @ opponent"

That's good. I don't mind a little celebrating. Some guys took it too far and that's why the rule came in. Actually, our own Shaun Alexander was one of the worst offenders after his TD's. They were mostly pretty funny but guys were starting to rehearse what they'd do if they scored and was becoming too much.

Still, Rice better be careful. He spins that ball after almost every catch.

Rice spinning the ball does two things. One, it makes the ball stay 95% of the time right where he dropped it. A good thing as the refs are not chasing it and two, It's just flat out cool and can not be looked at as a delay of game or taunting unless its right at a players feet. I say keep that ball spinning Sydney.

I for one can't stand the showoffs that spin the ball, toss it away from the referee, spike the ball, etc.
Pisses me off when a referee has his hands out for the ball and the player drops it at his feet, or throws it in a different direction. Do they really need to 'celebrate' every stinkin play?
Barry Sanders knew how to act appropriate.

My issue isn't with guys who celebrate a TD. My issue is with those that celebrate a completion or a first down as if it was a TD. Time and place. Catching the ball is your job. Why celebrate what you are in essence SUPPOSED to do? If a guy spins the ball, even at an opponent, after a TD, I don't really care. You don't want to see that as a defender? Stop him from getting into the end zone. If it happens on the 30 yd line, penalize them is what I would say.

I agree with both of these posts. I don't celebrate every time I complete a work assignment. It's my job.

I agree with the folks who think the celebrating after even the most mundane plays needs to stop.

Especially receivers. I mean a half decent WR in the NFL will catch 50-100 balls in a season. That is a lot of celebrating if you spin the ball most of the time.

On the other hand, you have LB's, Safeties, DL's who celebrate after a sack which I think is fair because most guys will only get a couple a season. BUT, on the other, other hand, when Merriman was doing his lame sack dance it got old quickly because he was getting a lot of sacks at the time.

Bottom line is that it boils down to moderation. If these guys weren't over doing it the league wouldn't have needed the rule. It sucks too, because some of that stuff is great to watch. Imagine if Dion Sanders was never allowed to high step into the endzone or there was no Icky Shuffle.

Spinning the ball after a catch .... WTF is the NFL doing ? I get over taunting stuff but that's just tick tack..

I don't think a ball spin is a big deal though... It's not really taunting..

Celebration has never bothered me. Sometimes it's excessive and stupid, but even then I could care less.

The NFL just needs to let these guys have fun, let them play and stop making rules for every little thing that they can think of because eventually the game will be unrecognizable. The only ones that should be offended by Rice spinning the ball is the opposing defense.

It'll be interesting to see how strict the league is with going to be about this rule. Hopefully they aren't so strict with it that enforcing the rule becomes a bigger distraction than the celebrations that this rule is meant to curb were.

Sounds like they're taking a page or two from college rule books. You know how much they like to crack down on celebrations THERE...
