There's a couple of us here. A bunch of us came over from Fox a couple years ago, unfortunately most went back there. It'll be nice to have more chatter during football season. We post on the Vikes thread all year though, so don't be a stranger..Especially with the draft next week.

Absolutely awesome to be here!

There are quite a few MLB fans around here, but as far as I know, I am the only one who is fanatical enough to talk shit about it on Message Boards for years on end. I really wish there were more around here who do the same. Maybe I can convince a few of my mates to join up?? They might be a bit light on the side of knowledge, though.

Look forward to some actual baseball talk, and even more off-topic jibberish!

There is no one spot just yet Bulldog, pretty much like CBS. And, like CBS, it is probably wise to I.D what will be this board "daily thread", and decide if you want in or out. Like CBS, I am now out of that mix, so I will flow with the other MLB threads, and have kind of signed up to man a fantasy baseball thread here already, so you can always check in there.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! reports that, the day after the Padres-Dodgers brawl, Padres President and CEO Tom Garfinkel told Padres season ticket holders that Zack Greinke was to blame for is own injury, saying that Greinke threw at Quentin on purpose and that he shouldn’t have put his shoulder down when the much larger Quentin rushed at him. Oh, and then this:

“He threw at him on purpose, OK?” Garfinkel told an estimated crowd of 40 or 50 at Petco Park on Friday, a day after the fight. “That’s what happened. They can say 3-and-2 count, 2-1 game, no one does that. Zack Greinke is a different kind of guy. Anyone seen ‘Rain Man’? He’s a very smart guy.”

How out of whack is the mindset of MLB when you consider this story and info?


Yovani Gallardo is three days removed from blowing a .22 BAC in the wee wee hours. Today’s pitching matchup in the Giants-Brewers game: Matt Cain vs. Yovani Gallardo. As far as baseball is concerned, Gallardo getting behind the wheel at three times the legal limit is a non-event. There has been and will be zero discipline for it.
Major League Baseball’s presumed rationale for this — because they’ve never, to my knowledge, explained themselves otherwise — is that there can and should be no discipline meted out to Gallardo or others who behave like he did because a DUI is not a baseball transgression. And I suppose that holds up nicely enough. Unless, of course, you remember that:

• Carl Crawford is likely getting fined for wearing mismatched shoes;
• Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for voicing an unpopular political opinion and intemperate tweeting, among other things;
• Delmon Young was suspended for walking while drunk and then spewing some hateful rhetoric;
• Yunel Escobar was suspended a few games for writing stupid crap on his eye black;
• Minor leaguers get suspended for using substances that are less harmful than alcohol in the privacy of their own homes;
• A broadcaster was once suspended indefinitely and then fired because he liked to wear suits.

The top 10 free agents for 2014 will likely be:


1. Robinson Cano. Interesting news earlier this month, as Cano fired agent Scott Boras in favor of CAA and Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports. Seasoned baseball agent Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA will take lead on contract negotiations, though the agent told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports Jay-Z will be "intimately involved." There's a general feeling that Cano's agency switch makes an extension more likely, but we haven't heard of any progress on that front lately. In an MLBTR poll a week ago of over 13,000 readers, 78% felt Cano would be extended by the Yankees.
2. Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury is not off to a blazing start -- he's got six extra-base hits in 67 plate appearances, but he's drawing fewer walks than ever. I'm willing to overlook that for now and focus on the fact that the 29-year-old appears fully healthy.
3. Shin-Soo Choo. The 30-year-old doesn't appear suited for center field, but he's off to a great start offensively. With good health, he could hit 15+ home runs and score 100 with his usual solid OBP, which should play quite well in free agency.
4. Josh Johnson. JJ looked good in his last start against the White Sox, a nice bounceback from a career-worst 1 1/3 inning stint against Detroit. In an MLBTR poll Monday of over 15,000 readers, Johnson was voted the best free agent starter of the upcoming class. However, he won that vote with about 19.6% of the total, and plenty of readers favored Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay, Tim Hudson, Matt Garza, or Paul Maholm.
5. Hunter Pence. He's shown some pop in the early going, but Pence's walk rate is down and his strikeout rate is up. Pence's ranking here is tenuous.
6. Chase Utley. A new entrant to this list, Utley is finally healthy and is hitting for big power. His .566 slugging percentage ranks fourth among qualified second basemen. A healthy campaign should lead to a multiyear deal, though at age 35 in December it may be difficult to find a third guaranteed year.
7. Matt Garza. That Garza ranks as the second best free agent starter speaks to the huge question marks in this free agent class, since he hasn't pitched in the Majors since July 21st of last year due to injuries. But he's slated for a minor league rehab appearance tomorrow, and if he's the Garza of old for five months or so, he'll do well in free agency.
8. Brian McCann. As he rehabbed from shoulder surgery, McCann encountered some tenderness in his right wrist. It's said to be a minor issue, and he should begin catching in extended spring training soon.
9. Tim Lincecum. There's been nothing positive about Lincecum's first three starts, as he leads MLB in walks allowed and has surrendered three home runs in 16 innings. It's much too early to declare him finished as a useful starting pitcher, but he is in danger of dropping out of the top ten free agents.
10. Roy Halladay. It hasn't been much better for Doc, who looked quite bad in his first two starts of the season. He did shut down the Giancarlo Stanton-less Marlins on Sunday, a team currently hitting .209/.272/.271. Tomorrow's start against the Cardinals will be a better test.

The Reds will resign Choo if he continues hitting like this. I doubt Ludwick will be there next season so Choo will slide over and make room for Das Wonderkid Hamilton.
