ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Lions are "kicking around idea of new kicker," and have worked out free agents Rob Bironas, Alex Henery and Garrett Hartley.

Seventh-round rookie Nate Freese is just two for his first five on field goals, and on extremely thin ice. Arguably any of the three veterans the Lions worked out would be an improvement.

Guess the Lions are pretty serious about winning now. I would be definitely interested in Rob Bironas kicking in the dome. Secondly, it's a misprint on rotoworld. Dude missed 3 of 5. Not to mention, killing all the momentum in Carolina from the huge Monday night win over the Giants.

Why'd he get cut by the Titans?

Please tell me it was over money....

Bironas or Alex Henry would be welcome additions. Henry is still a pretty young guy and has hit 86% of his FGs in his three years in the NFL, so he could provide an immediate lift as well as a long-term solution...

I don't think so. He had a down year last year and they think he's lost a bit. He was a great kicker for them, though. Would love to have him here if he's looking sharp.

Jayfan might have better insight on this one if he watched the Titans much last year, but everything I've read has cited him being released as a cost-cutting move.

His stats show him going 25 for 29 last year with a long of 55, so definitely doesn't appear to be performance-related.

I was all about adding him last night, but that was before I realized Alex Henry was a career 86% kicker in his 3 seasons. Being young, I figured the only reason the Eagles were moving on from him is if he sucked, but that doesn't appear to be the case at all. He dipped to 82% last year, but if that's the lowest of his three year career I'd say he's doing pretty good. The UDFA the Eagles elected to keep over him must have been very impressive.

Another option would be to roll with Freese for another two weeks and see where he's at then. In two weeks Matt Prater's suspension is up and the Broncos will be cutting Brandon McManus, a youngster with an absolute monster leg. They showed him knocking down a 75 yarder in the pre-game warm-ups at Denver already this year. The air is thin there, but he's still got him a fuckin' boot.

The sad part is Freese's problem looks correctable. He is just over rotating a bit and coming accross the ball instead of through it. Every kick will fade to the right. Its like a power fade in golf.

As far as McManus, I am not sure I would do that. I would definitely let him compete though. Even Freese could reach 70 out there. His 50 yard attempts were actually going over the goal posts. Thats why 1 of them was not good. Easily 60 yard+ distance and that was in Carolina.

Id gladly take 29/32. The Rookie would have to hit 27 in a row though, that'd be tough.

I say sign him.

Yep, I stand corrected. A good friend of mine, who's a big Titans fan, insists that he lost some length last year. But it does seem that the driving force behind letting him go was money. Should have back-checked before I posted.

I am surprised Whisenhunt could not correct a issue with anything football related?

Money it was as I posted an article on
Ryan Succop or Rob Bironas: Who is the better choice?

Money
Bironas was scheduled to make a base salary of $2.875 million this year. Succop, according to overthecap.com, had been scheduled to make a base salary of $1.95 million with the Chiefs, who cut him. He won't make near that kind of money with the Titans.

Advantage: Succop.

Alex Henry was Nebraska's Punter and PK while in college, so in an emergency he has experience at the college level to punt should Sam Martin go down.

Is the reason no kicker is a dual kicker just concerns with injuries? (Injury concerns...) Not in that his leg will be overworked, but in that if he gets hurt, you're fucked?

It's just throwing a ball so why can't all pitchers throw all varieties of pitches equally well?
