Hate me if you want, but I gotta say it, fellas.

You gave him WAY too much. You know that, right?

By the current market, the yearly amount we gave him isn't that crazy at all, actually.

I'm betting other clubs were offering him near the same amount of money, but only for 2-3 years. If that's correct, then it would be more accurate to say the M's signed him for too long.

I have rarely heard of anyone underpaying in free agency.*

*(the O's got a hell of a bargain last year on Cruz)

Good right-handed power bats are pretty scarce these days.

You know that we as fans don't actually pay him, right? You know that the owners of the Mariners are billionaires playing in a non-cap sport, right?

They gave him what it took to get him here, and if that means overpaying based off of what you think is his value then so be it. He just bolstered our lineup, and I could give two shid's how much we paid. I do know we still have Walker & Paxton, and that's worth it's weight in gold right now.

How much did the M's outbid everybody else by to get Cano to come to Safeco?

There's overpaying, and there's overpaying.

Kind of a no brainer for the Mariners. Either you overpay or you don't get the player. The only problem I have with the deal is the way the Mariners will approach the remainder of the off season.

My hope is that they continue to try and acquire players. My fear is that this deal has used up the remaining money ownership will let them spend. What makes me optimistic is that this deal happened before winter meetings.

That's probably the case...the main concern with Cruz is that he's 34, and big-body type sluggers generally don't age well (the decline/crash is more rapid and more severe than the average player).
