Surprisingly he’s only taken 5 Alabama guys. Arkansas is the other team tied with Georgia at 7.

And looking at that list from Florida, I hope he doesn’t draft anyone else!

So, two teams that Saban has to prep against.

Is that some Saban input?

Probably part of it. He had connections at those schools when he was pulling a lot of guys from there (Muschamp, Bielema, etc.), too, though.

More random nuggets reviewing BB’s draft history (which I do every year as part of mock prep):

He’s drafted two RB’s in the 1st (Maroney and Sony) and one in the 2nd (Shane Vereen).

He’s never drafted a RB in the 5th

The 10 most valuable picks to the Patriots not named Tom Brady (by pfr’s Approximate Value metric):

Mankins
Light
Wilfork
Seymour
Gronk
Koppen
DMac
Hightower
Edelman
Solder

With the Draft tomorrow evening, who is the 1 guy you really want the Patriots to select in the 1st round.(assuming they stay at #23. And be realistic. No Chase Young) And the 1 guy you hope they stay away from?

For me, the 1 guy I hope they get is Kenneth Murray LB Oklahoma. A do it all LB. Can cover RB’s and TE’s.

The guy I hope they do not take is Jordan Love. Not sold on him 1 bit.

Murray makes sense. I would not be averse to Xavier McKinney S Alabama. I feel there is a need DMAC is up there. I agree I don't want Love if we take a QB there I would take Hebert over Love.

Kinlaw is my dream pick if he drops within range of a reasonable trade up. The D hasn’t had a real game wrecker on the line in a long time and Kinlaw’s upside is through the roof. Murray, Queen, McKinney, or Epenesa would be nice value alternatives at 23.

Count me in the not feeling the Love club, as well. He’s a Day 2 player in my book.

I'd be good with an OT, as well.

A DT prospect who doesn't seem to get much run who I think is a Round 1 guy all day is Jordan Elliott from Missouri. My second-favorite guy for the Pats after Kinlaw. If they can pull off a trade down to the early 2nd and still get him or Cesar Ruiz that would be great, too.

I don't know enough college ball to even make a stab at a great 1st round pick.

I keep hearing Tua. He is my "Hope not" pick.

I’d much rather have Tua than Love that’s for sure. Perfect fit for McD’s offense. The health concerns are real of course but if they somehow came out of Thursday with Tua without mortgaging any significant future assets that’s a pick we should be happy with.

I have a hard time seeing Tua fall to a range where you don't have to mortgage some of the future to go get him. If he falls say to around 10 I could see Miami using all of their draft capital to go get him. That is the problem for the Patriots is they just don't have a ton of capital this year to be able to move up in the 1st a whole lot. They have a ton of draft picks but most are so late they have very little value.

I am curious to see where Tua goes I can see him dropping but we will see.

I also read the Pats are looking at Fromm which may be a good deal we can get him out the first. I know people are hesitant but his senior year he lost a ton of talent at WR, RB, C he may be better then where he will be drafted.

Im a fan of Fromm. And wouldn’t mind spending one of our 3rds on him.

Concur. Like I said I still think he goes by 5. Maybe 6 if Miami moves up to 3 for a tackle. Was mostly just saying there’s no way he’s a “hope not” pick for me, nor do I think he should be for anyone else if they somehow pulled it off.

My feeling still is that BB will go defense heavy this year? which means he'll go offense heavy and select guys I've never heard of.

If he goes D I like anyone of these three with the first pick; Murray, Kinlaw or Epensa. All have good traits and I'll leave it up to Bill to decide which one will complement this years scheme.

If Chaissson drops I'd love him here.

If NE trades down and all are gone I wouldn't mine Patrick Queen from LSU late in the 1st.

I think the perception of BB zagging when everyone else is zigging is way overstated. It's more like Bill acts in a straight line going after his "value" while everyone else is zigzagging.

And on the field he's not zagging when he does the opposite of everyone else, he's taking a straight line to the weaknesses his opponents have created in themselves. It's shear magic (not really) that he recognizes the value to go after roles other teams aren't valuing while they chase trends. He chases roles that take advantage of the weaknesses created by those trends.
