Officiating shouldn't decide games. Get the calls right. They have replay assistance and available technology, get it right.

Baseball is infuriating for example. Inconsistent umps with strike zones that don't match the rules. Institute the electronic zone already, batters will adjust.

If there's a blown call in the final minutes, what mistakes did the losing team make earlier in the game that could have kept them from being in position to lose because of 1 blown call?

I don’t think that is the right logic. All teams will make mistakes, even just small, but all you can do is put your team in position to win. Josh Allen continued to get 1st downs and he got another one but it was taken away. Calls change outcomes too, saying a team should play better bc of blown calls doesn’t help the fact the officiating was pretty one-sided and can determine the game.
The real answer is trying to find a solution for the problem. So there either isn’t a solution and the NFL is rigged. Honestly, if there was a sport that could be rigged it’s the NFL. I don’t want to believe that…but all it takes is one or two guys to make that happen.

That put themselves in position to win a game but it was taken away at the end of a game bc of a dirty call. If they get the right call they win the game. Saying if they made the right playcalling decision in the 2nd quarter of the game would make the difference is beyond crazy.

It isn’t black and white. I would say this is mainly the case (you play better and you win) but I have watched plenty of games where the calls are completely one-sided. It isn’t just one or two calls, it’s a chain reaction. It can also kill team momentum, which isn’t talked about enough. Losing 7 points could turn into 14 points and so on. In some cases saying a team can play better is just bad logic. Not all cases are the same.

I'm not sure if it is home teams in basketball or if it is star teams. The Pistons aren't getting calls versus the Celtics even at home and I think that is likely true of your Wizards as well.

There's a level of chicken/egg to star calls though, especially for defenders. Star corners get away with more contact and holding, which in turn makes them more effective.

And all stars may get calls, but they do not get equal calls. Guys like Mahomes and Brady get a higher level of protection from the refs than someone like Allen does, which is why the past year or two he has resorted to embellishing that contact.
