Pretty sure Mayfield will win it.
I originally laughed at that, but might be true? That'll be interesting. Could be a WWE "Loser Leaves Town" match. lol

I don't think either of them are "star quality QB's". But I think both are starter quality QB's. There are at least 7 other teams who have big question marks at QB. So I could see whoever loses the competition being traded to one of those teams.
I guess that depends on how you define starter quality QB.
In the literal term, I don’t believe there are 32 guys better than Darnold and Baker.
But, if Darnold is your QB, he is close enough to the bottom of that list that you will always be looking for an upgrade.
That to me is not “starter quality”. I don’t think there are 32 starter quality QBs in the NFL. There are always a few teams that get stuck.
Baker might be better than Darnold by enough that the Panthers can roll with him for a few years. We shall see how he does this year if he can win the job.
Baker's future in Carolina may be short. They have very little draft capital invested and just drafted a QB with more capital. Baker's looming free agency could price them out of his services unless he impresses.
Yeah Corral is nothing special, he will be a backup at best. He really didn't even look special in college.Matt Coral sucks. There is minimal investment in him.
And they picked him at the end of the 3rd round because nobody else wanted to invest a high pick in him.
Baker is the only QB on that team who might be a top 25 starter. That is not to say they will keep him, but Baker is probably the best of a very weak QB room.
Darnold could improve but that is unlikely, he had a great 4 games then kinda just went back to being just average. He is backup worthy. Some people are saying bc Darnold has the highest cap hit he will be the starter. There will be a competition but I would be surprised if Baker doesn't win it.
This is all reward, basically no risk. You pay a starting caliber QB $5M and give up a 5th, possibly a 4th. That is a great deal. If he plays well enough he can get a nice multi-year deal but I don't believe it will be too pricey unless he absolutely just plays ridiculous, don't expect that.
To be fair, Darnold has been in some pretty shitty situations. I don't see him as any kind of star, but I think he needs a season or 2 in a more settled situation with better coaches to see if he can be a starter for a good team or will be a career backup.
The problem is that this has been going on long enough that he's quickly reaching a point where he is going to have to start showing some consistency.
It'll be funny if BM can't beat out Darnold for the starting job. But I don't expect that to happen.
He may not. As I pointed out yesterday, Darnold has home field advantage in that he already knows everyone and knows the system.
Also, training camp is shorter now.
Baker could actually be the better QB, but still lose the competition because he may not be better enough to form relationships, learn the offense AND perform better than Darnold.
What will be interesting to see is if Darnold wins the job...will the Panthers look to trade him quickly or will they keep him around for a few weeks in case Darnold fades or gets hurt.

Assuming BM's fully recovered from surgery I don't see Darnold beating him out.
Comparing their career numbers there's nothing Darnold does better than BM.
We'll see. I don't think Baker is as good as you seem to think. He's not bad, but his numbers in Cleveland are pretty bad. Even if he's better than Darnold, I don't think he's better enough to overcome the advantages Darnold will have. At least not right away.
Rhule is said to be on the hot seat, so I could see Darnold wining the job coming out of camp, then as the season goes on, he reverts to some of his reckless play and Baker ends up taking over.
And comparing their career numbers doesn't account for Baker being in a better situation with better coaches and talent around him.
Man, this case is getting even crazier...interesting if true.....
