Make no mistake about it, softball parents are absolutely crazy. I was coaching a lot so I had to at least try to stay sane. The travel ball schedule those high level girls play is insane.
They're getting started too young with that, too. I don't really see why players younger than 11 or 12 are doing travel ball and the like, unless there's some aspect of necessity like living in a remote rural area.

They talked about this stuff on the Nash/Lebron podcast (Luca was the guest). The year round focus on one sport is stealing these kids' childhoods, and too often it's just a money making hustle for the coaches/trainers.

I didn't tune in to that but I saw some people pointing out they had talked about single sport specialization and these people noted that Bronnie was an example of someone who only played basketball.

And AAU tournament teams cost a shit ton and then they charge you more to go watch your kid.

Not sure where else to post this because I can’t post on the politics forum but here goes:

You remember the last few days of school during your high school years? Just playing out the string, checking boxes, teachers showing movies, etc…

All my work is done. We have done our Finals review. 20 minute classes today. I had 3 minutes of reminders but then said you kids can hang out with each other, the rest of the class is yours. Just make sure you’re seated but sit wherever you want.

The classroom is silent right now. These kids are going to go 10 weeks without seeing the majority of their classmates and they’re all sucked into their phones. It’s arguably one of the saddest things I see as a teacher. I can’t get over how much these kids don’t interact with each other the way we used to.

You have the wrong attitude about this...

You're in a classroom full of teenager and it's silent.

Enjoy that. lol

Seriously though...it's why I say that the internet, etc. is, at the same time, the greatest and worst invention in history.

Instant access to all kind of important info, etc. that used to take hours, days, weeks to find.

But it also leads to folks who don't know how to interact face to face.

It is weird for us who grew up at a different time, but a lot of that phone time IS socializing for Gen Z...they socialize online because they can. We didn't have the option.

I still prefer our childhood but that's always the case, we all think the old days were better. The kids growing up today, this is their reality, they don't know what they're 'missing' so they don't miss it. Current teenagers have a lot less negative behaviors like teen pregnancy, drinking, and drugs than past generations...that's the tradeoff when they spend more time interacting online instead of in person.

On the other hand, it's creating a generation of incels.

When I look back at my childhood in the 70s/80s, I cherish that freedom we had. Go out and play, be home by dark (or dinner). My parents look forward to having their grandchildren visit (my nieces), but they rarely look up from their devices when they're there.

Pretty sure there were incels before the iPhone

Like I said, we all prefer the old days and the way we grew up. It's partly because we were young and healthy and had very few responsibilities to go with that freedom. Teenagers today will look back fondly on the 2020s and think their kids have it worse.

I guess (prefer our way of growing up) but on days I was sick (or pretending to be sick) having an iphone or at least more than a handful of channel options (mostly soap operas) I could get behind.

Growing up I was a big time reader, read a ton of books for fun, even literature type stuff, and not assigned in school...partly because I'm a brainiac but also I have a little ADHD and always need to keep my brain occupied, need constant input (one reason I am on this site so much even at work). But if I had the tech my kids do I'd have read a lot less and been on the phone most of that time...

As kind of mentioned, I could have just gotten behind shows I liked coming on earlier (or all day sportscenter) instead of all soaps or game shows until 3 or later.

Barkley saying wether it's next year or the following year.....he might just hang them up and it may come out of nowhere. He got his ring and already contemplating retirement.

LOL.

Derek Carr showed what a team player he is and was.

Didn't want to have surgery, not play and just rake the Saints money.
