Here’s a question: If you knew you’d only get 5 usable years from VW, would you draft him #1?

I can’t imagine why anyone would ever think that but the answer is yes of course.

You would certainly have to accelerate your roster readiness to compete for the playoffs.

The question is why would you ever only get 5 useful years out of him? If he means before he walks then you still have an incredible asset you can get a lot for.

I think the question is likely based on injury issues for height outliers?

Sure seems like Wemby was happy that the Rockets didn't get #1 from the video of him watching the selection process, lol.

Other than when Kawhi kind of bailed the Spurs have pretty much been a no nonsense franchise. Pop won’t be there long, as good of a place as any for him to plant his flag.

In that case, probably not.

No rookie has ever led the a team to an NBA championship without some kinda additional superstar, which the Spurs clearly don't have and probably won't be able to get this summer.

In a 5 year window, the best you would hope for it a decent playoff run in year 4 and 5

San Antonio has a rep for developing international prospects and they were Frenchman Tony Parker’s team.

Would guess the Spurs were VW’s favorite team as a kid.

Would be like a 2000 kid being linked to the Bulls.

Have to say, I do find it funny that Windy in the interview and pretty much everyone are talking like the draft has already happened.

Of course VW is going 1, but let’s pump the brakes until it is actually official.

Go the F away. You are ruining it for the reasonable conspiracy folks who can make a point without being a complete idiot.
Right, the ones who think the nba makes minor decisions to cause game 7s, but totally don't lean on the scale otherwise because that would be no no bad bad.

All about money

One interesting note about our formula for determining the best-selling jerseys prior to 2001 was that there was one constant anomaly that went against our whole philosophy of the best-selling jerseys often coming from NBA championship teams and MVPs. That one outlier was the San Antonio Spurs. As enjoyable as the Spurs were to watch, not once did Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker lead the league in jersey sales in any of their five championship runs in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, or 2014.

Get those international jersey sales poppin back in France

Interestingly, while nearly 20 percent of NBA players are from countries other than the United States, only one international player (Dirk Nowitzki) breaks into the list of top-selling NBA jerseys in the United States. However, four out of the fifteen top-selling NBA jerseys internationally are those of international players (Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker and Ricky Rubio). This demonstrates that international fans–as opposed to NBA fans in the United States–are more likely to drive the jersey sales of international-born NBA players.

Ref calls are much easier to affect than the overly complicated draft lottery. Just because it isn't done in front of a TV camera, that allows you to become a "random denier" or whatever you want to call it. Doesn't make it one iota appropriate or accurate however.
