I mean Murphy doesn't help their infield defense, but if you're gonna move Carpenter back to 3B, you might as well go for the bigger bat, right?
More expensive:suds:

I don't really see it as a fire sale. They've done without Murphy most of the season, and he's a defensive liability and he hasn't been really hitting like he used to either. And Ryan Zimmerman has been raking ever since he got off the DL, and they already had a defensive liability backup first baseman that can hit for power in Mark Reynolds. Having Reynolds and Adams both on the bench was a bit redundant.

Murphy has been hot for a while now.

Average is back to .300

But yeah, his D doesn’t provide much.

Addison Russell was scratched from the Cubs' starting lineup on Tuesday due to a sore right shoulder.

It's unclear whether this is more than a day-to-day situation. Russell is batting just .259/.326/.359 in 112 games this season and figures to lose playing time following the Cubs' acquisition of Daniel Murphy.

Kris Bryant (shoulder) is due to take regular on-field batting practice on Tuesday.
That will represent a significant step in the right direction for the star third baseman, who's logged just 40 at-bats since June 22 due to a lingering left shoulder injury. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said recently that he expects Bryant to return to the active roster before the end of August. David Bote has been getting the majority of the playing time at the hot corner in Bryant's absence

great pick up of murphy and that way he cant kill them in the post season:suds:

Lol I'd rather him play 3rd put KB in left and let Schearber DH. But good call

Agreed. That’s the best setup in all likelihood.

Should’ve traded Harper too.

If they don’t keep him his is a crushing blow to the franchise.

I remember the days when Ryan Zimmerman was a third baseman and Ian Desmond played short stop. It was fun times. If you hit a grounder to the left side of the field, there was a 78% chance you were reaching via error.

It's about time. That team has too much talent to play this badly and to have never made it past the first round. Time to tear it down and build from scratch. Biggest bunch of underachievers as a team I've seen in a while in MLB

Isn't that what they were doing to get Harper and Strasburg in the first place? Didn't work out well for them at all... They did bring back Harper so who knows what they will do. How far off the division lead were they at the trade deadline?

About the same distance as they are now.

Strasburg is about to be making over 30 million per season, and when they gave him that deal, they basically chose Strasburg over Harper, which was a big mistake.

ok, makes no sense why they didn't do anything then.... They can't be that hard for cash so that couldn't have been it. Doesn't necessarily mean they chose Stras over Harper, just meant at the time they thought that was the money that would get Stras and I am sure they were worrying about paying Harper later

They can afford both, but they just may not be the high bidder.

They need to save money for sure, but they could make enough room for both machado and Harper if they wanted to.

They went on a little hot streak right after the deadline and got to as close as 4.5 games out of the division and closer to the wild card, then they lost 4.5 games to the Braves in a 4 day stretch.

Perhaps with them moving on from the players they did today was a step in that direction of saving some money for those two... What's Machado's deal with the Dodgers? Only a year?

They tanked for a bit after the Cubs hit a walk off grand slam while we were playing the Marlins. Shit happens.

It took the franchise to places it had never been before. Never could do anything when they got there, but for the first time, they were in the dance most every year for a good little stretch there.
