That must open up a roster spot. Ellington and Smith probably round out the 15. Not excited about either of those two.

Freak leg fracture to start his Lakers career. He was healthy going into the season. It sucks we never really got to see Nash.

I'm fine with Smith and Ellington. As CL says, Smith is aggressive and plays hard. Ellington hasn't looked good, but maybe there's some talent there that can be nurtured.

Either way, they're practice fodder who are unlikely to see much time on the floor except in blowouts, so it really doesn't effect the team too much.

Everyone involved with the Nash contract was thinking about a Championship, he could have taken more money elsewhere. He wasn't able to do it, but that's not to say he was only in it for the money because what he really wanted was a ring. It sucks that we only got a half season of healthy Nash but that's the way it goes sometimes.

He should just try to be a coach, D-Fish did it lol. He can try to earn some of that paycheck this year.

Absolutely hate it for him. He's been so close to being back several times, even looking like vintage Nash a couple games, but something would always come up. I can't imagine how unbelievably frustrating that must be for an athlete like him.

I liked him but its nice to get closure. He was still unknown status as of yesterday and i was just tired of it. Honestly guys, we are better served with Lin and he does need a contract and i expect good things out of a guy who was among league leaders in field goal percentage in the paint last year. He has looked very similar this year so far. Also, Lin has talked about how Nash has been a mentor along with Kobe. How he has learned from both and how Kobes leadership style of challenging him, is much different and he appreciates it as it is the first time this has happened to him in his career. He also mentions how he wants to play more and wants to play when the games on the line. Of which he has a pretty decent record in. Hmmm complete opposite of some other guy...

For all the crap Kobe gets, his competitiveness and encouraging guys to play to their best may be his best skill. I think Lin is going to have his best year yet. Kobe may make a good coach some day just like B. Scott is now demonstrating being back home. Maybe all of Scott's so-called failures elsewhere were because he was not home. In other places, he had to build that championship culture besides work on basketball stuff. In Lakerland it is expected. Jeannie Buss is the Buss family member that has that best crystallized in her thinking and you can see her influence on the club right now. Success breeds success and the Lakers are a classic example.

Exactly Inimical. Now they know what they are working with. Lin and Price at the top of the PG depth chart, although Kobe is like a de facto PG as well.

This is from Bresnahan's LA Times article...

Nash is not officially announcing his retirement, though he probably will determine that at some point this season. Until he did retire, the Lakers could trade him to another team, essentially as an expiring contract, though it would be a longshot for Nash to play again after basically sitting out two consecutive seasons. If Nash were to be traded, the Lakers would have to pay him an additional 15% trade kicker, as per terms of his contract.

The Lakers could apply for a disabled player exception for up to half of Nash's salary, or $4.85 million. The exception could be used to sign a player for the remainder of the season or trade for a player making up to $4.95 million in the final year of his contract.

His $9.7mil still counts towards the cap, but at least they have some options to fill his roster spot.

You just don't say it to the press LOL

I disagree. Think about it. When these guys say things like "I play for the love of the game" or "I would play this game for free" or "It's not about the money for me", we all roll our eyes and call bullshit.

Then, when a guy comes out and says "Heck yes, I do it for the money", we tell him "You can't say that" or "See, he's just greedy". I appreciate the honesty myself because I'll tell you what, if I were in his position, I'd do the same thing for the same reason.

Interesting. Ellington likely makes the team because they need another guard with Nash done.

It will interesting to see what Mitch can do with the disabled player exception. They have a nice large movable contract in Jordan Hill as well. I wouldn't count out a significant deal happening this season.

Depends on what the other team wants right? If they are looking to dump a good player with a multi-year contract because they are looking for salary cap relief next summer, a significant deal can happen. He is getting paid $9mil this season with a $9mil team option for next season. It could be a similar situation to how the Lakers acquired Gasol.

Possibly....But i just dont see them getting someone as good as Pau (at the time) out there for Hill......I mean a lot of the bad teams have a lot of young cheap players so it will be hard to get someone of that caliber for teams that are trying to rebuild....

maybe a brandon knight type player or hell even Josh smith if the Pistons decide to keep monroe going forward....

What an embarrassment this guy is; hanging on for a check! Anyone else with any kind of self-respect would have retired or agreed to an alternative job behind the scenes! What good is a 40 year old injured guard? Just slimy!

You don't come out saying that when you have not contributed much in two years for what the Lakers gave up for you.. That is just stupid. If he was playing well and contributing to the team then I could forgive him. A lot fans knew he was stealing money, but to come out and admit it?
