Here is Smith's first comment about the deep ball to Ginn:

Q: "The Fade to Ginn and also the deep pass to him, did you guys talk at all about what went on there..."

A: "You know, the deep ball..., I didn't even see, you know, I got hit when it was...I didn't even see the ball come down, didn't know where it went, um, so, and I wasn't even sure what happened..."

The bolded parts of his answer lead me to believe the hit did affect how the ball came out of Smiths hand and thus the trajectory as well. Smith doesn't throw a very 'nice ball' anyway, but this one was especially ugly.

It will be interesting to hear/read how this comment develops after they have a chance to "Singletary" the film.

That entire quote seems to me more like Alex not throwing his teammate under the bus. He didn't get hit until after the ball left his hand if I remember correctly... anyway to me it's simple, Ginn somehow lost sight of the ball. I don't give a shit if the trajectory was off or whatever the goddamn ball landed 3 feet in front of him and he should have caught it and it would have been a td and he didn't and that's that.

I could not disagree more. It was an absolutely critical game and everyone on that team knew it. That is what is so disturbing about it. They had to win that game to stay in the driver's seat for the #2 seed which is the only way the team is going anywhere in the playoffs.

Agreed! Pittsburgh was our 'one to give'.

If it is reasonable to assume that Harbaugh does want the #2 seed, then from that same perspective we have just turned the Pittsburgh game into a must win.

NO doesn't have a tough schedule down the stretch. The Pitts game was big but now it is huge.

NO doesn't have an easy schedule either. Two division opponents that they beat by 3 points last time around.

The defense has only given up like 14 points a game average. I say the corners have done a pretty good job with that stat. I also am not saying it couldn't be upgraded. So it might take more than one big move to get to the super bowl (calm down) but I've expressed it many times, this team would be a thousand times better if they had a QB that could actually pass the ball farther than 6 yards.

now you're just sounding like a complete retard

The Atl game will definitely be a challenge but I'd be surprised to see them lose to Minn or Carolina. If they can just lose one I'll be very happy.

Not at all, Smith wasn't throwing anyone under anything...As for catching the ball, I get it, where the ball lands makes it look like he should have been able to catch it, but it is kind of tough to catch something you don't see.

Yeah, Storm, Atlanta is the only team of the three that still has something to play for and the only one I think has a legitimate shot at beating NO - Even playing in NO, the Falcons usually play the Saints tough.

I would prefer we just go 13-3 and not worry about the Saints at all.

Hmmm. A must win for the Steelers and a must win for the Niners. Who's your money on?

Hahaha! I never bet against my team - so I won't be betting on this one.

Maybe John can send some insights Jim's way on how to beat the Steelers.

We are the only legitimate barrier standing between Pittsburgh and a 13-3 record.

I don't want to make a mountain of a mole hill, but why not? Crabtree also said:

We need to stick together and not start to look for blame (Crabtree didn't do this, but this would be the next step if we have another bad showing). Bowman can't allow 2 of the 3 TDs. Crabtree has to work on getting separation. Smith needs to react quicker and work on his chemistry with the receivers. The oline needs to protect better.

So far it is a mole hill, but if we don't show up well against the Steelers, these two quotes, an anxious fan base, and a media doing what they've been trained to do can add up to a lot.

I don't mean to say you need to sugarcoat what you say, though that may in the future save you from some team implosion, small or big. Say what you mean, but you should mean team, right? You should mean individual improvement and team progress, right? Right now I'm not panicking (sp.?) because it was after a disappointing loss and these guys seem to have a good coach to lead them. I'm not worried, just putting two isolated quotes together. I'm sure Crabtree said other things to make it actually be a better reflection of his team frustrations. Receivers, after all, do want the ball because they think it makes the team better.

absolutely, don't start pointing fingers. in fact, don't even talk to the media cause they'll make it read 'pointing fingers'.

again, its not how you come off from a win, but how you react after a lost? players can't react like fans.

On to the next game! This loss sucked but we move on to Pitt. This team better come out fired up on Monday. They will be at home playing against a banged up steelers team who travels cross country and on national TV. We will find out a lot about our team after this game. They better bring it!

Hope Pwill can play.

Kind of hoping Willis gets in there.... but if it looks less likely, then sit him.

But i do hope he plays, unlike the NFC West, we need him vs pitt.

I apologize for turning this into a Smith thread. I just had to get that off my chest. I just can't believe how ridiculous it is that his bad days get even worse when he makes plays after escaping the rush and the receiver can't find the ball in the air... in a dome... or they drop passes in the endzone that hit them in the hands.

I wasn't trying to be all... grrrrr Smith Smith Smith... I was just thinking about how ridiculous the situation is as a whole. Put in the tapes for the offense, then accelerate them to 2x speed and play the Benny Hill music.. and it fits... and, I don't like it.

Like NN said, after this game, I have no more illusions about the 49ers going far in the playoffs this year. Although I disagree that Skelton picked the team apart, I'd say Fitzgerald did... but, either way, the secondary cannot win battles against Brees and Rodgers.

In the end, I'm glad Alex Smith exceeded any of our expectations by helping this team live up to it's potential as one of the best teams in the NFL. It's just too bad the secondary can't match the excellence of the front-seven... then this defense would carry the offense to a Super Bowl.

yes, although i nit-pick Alex Smith too, THIS season glad he took a big step up. VERY happy!

didn't expect too much from the secondary, and in fact IMO they exceeded expectations too. mainly Rogers but even the others did a good job. what we expected even more from.....was the O-line. if they came together as well as they should, the defense wouldn't have to carry the offense....at least not this much.

btw - ST's has also been great this season, the one area we tend to overlook is coverage. they've done an excellent job.
