Smith is not suited for the offense IMO, I base that on what I have seen from him over the past six years.

Regarding Garrard, I will post the opinions of others:

I just don’t see the 49ers making a run at Garrard. He has the traits suitable for the West Coast offense system, something the Jaguars tried installing in 2003. He doesn’t have any apparent connections to the 49ers coaching staff, and would he really be an upgrade over Alex Smith (assuming he wouldn’t come here to serve as a backup)? - Cam Inman

David Garrard is absolutely a “West Coast” type. When you look back on the 2003 draft, at a time when the Jaguars were installing the “West Coast Offense” under coordinator Bill Musgrave, it doesn’t make any sense that they tried to fit Byron Leftwich into that system. The Jags had two quarterbacks on their roster – Garrard and Mark Brunell – that were perfect “West Coast” types, and then they went out and drafted a player who didn’t fit it at all. It forced them to change and that forced coaching changes. - Vic Ketchman

I understand he moves well and is accurate on short and intermediate passes.

Do you think he is ill suited for a WCO style offense?

So you are using the opinions as facts? When did Garrard play run WCO that Harbaugh runs? Using opinions as facts to back up your own opinion is weak.

When did I say he was ill suited for the WCO? Look at all my post and show me where I had him 'Ill suited" for anything.

The problem with you is that you think your opinion is fact while I would respect your opinion, passing them off like they are facts does not make them facts

You're just being stupid now. If Leaf, Couch, and Carr can get second chances... Smith is getting signed somewhere.

What makes you think Garrard will get a job soon?? Is it the repeated reports that he has 5 teams interested in him?? Wow, great insight. This just in, the Earth orbits around the Sun.

Alex Smith has gotten second, third and fourth chances already but you are right, he could get a call to be a backup.

How did I "use opinions as facts"? Opinions are all any of us have at this point and I never intended to post anything but opinions.

I never said that you said he was ill-suited, I asked you if you thought he was. If I wanted to say that, I would have asked "Why do you think he is ill-suited for the WCO rather than "Do you think he is ill suited for a WCO style offense?"

Are you being dishonest or did you miss where I stated that I was posting opinion and where I asked your opinion rather than stating your opinion for you?

Oh BTW.. Since you used cam Inman's opinion to prove your insinuation that Garrard is better suited than Alex Smith, you could have at least read the latter part of his statement ( Bolded parts below). Cam is not even sure Garrard is an upgrade to Alex Smith but then that is his opinion that you use to prove your opinion

Let me qoute your post "...Why not, at least as a stop gap to Kap or someone else? He seems better suited for a Harbaugh WCO than Smith and he has won a lot of games.
What is Kap going to learn from Smith? How is Smith going to run Harbaugh's offense?..."

The bolded section " He seems better suited for a Harbaugh WCO than Smith..." is a statement of fact in your part. It's not an IMO statement. Then I asked you to prove that statement. You posted opinions from Cam inman and the Vic Ketchman to support you assesment. That's using an opinion to support a statement of fact...

None of us can prove anything in this debate. There is no mathematical formula that will prove that Alex Smith will be better or worse for the Niners this year. It is all opinion.

That is a load of malarkey just because a statement isn't prefaced by IMO doesn't mean that it is being presented as a cold hard fact rather than opinion. Most of what is posted here is opinion.
I am repeatedly telling you that this is my opinion and you keep harping on the idea that I am presenting something as fact, something that cannot be determined to be a fact at this point.

Yup, that is true... Same with anything else... Garrard or one of the Rookies could come in ang light it up or stunk up the place... No one will know for sure until the game is played

Agreed
I am still at the point where I would rather see someone else have a shot than Smith because I think we all have seen all we need to from Smith, he is what he is. Garrard might not be a great fit but from what I have read and seen, he seems like he might be a better bridge to the future than Smith. That is my humble opinion in a nutshell take it or leave it and feel free to offer alternative opinions because I know that I am here more to learn from others than to teach anyone something they do not know.

Ok, I'm going to try to do the second half quickly. Not too many pass plays, so hopefully it's doable.

1st Drive:

1st and 10 from our 20 - Smith in the gun, they rush four. Has time, but the ball is batted at the line.

3rd and 8 at our 22 - Smith in the gun, weird formation with Gore and Walker immediately to his left. It looks like Smith moved Walker over to help pick up the blitz, but it doesn't work. Cowboys bring five. Ware beats Staley badly with an inside swim. Smith avoids it and moves left immediately into Hatcher, who had beaten Iupatit to the outside. Absolutely nowhere for Smith to go on this one.

Second Drive:

2nd and 8 at our 22 - Boys rush four. Smith has time, but doesn't go to his first read. Moves up the field to his left and overthrows an open Walker. Bad throw by Smith.

3rd and 8 at our 22 - Smith in the gun, they bring four. Smith has time, but throws behind Davis and it is intercepted. This almost had to be a miscommunication. He threw it a good three or four yards behind Davis. Regardless, an awful decision and pass.

1st and 10 at their 49 - They send four. Play action to Gore and faking the reverse (maybe doing too much) which slows down the drop. Ware beats Staley cleanly around the edge. Smith had time to go to his first read, hesitates a split second and begins to step into it. Replay shows Walker or Morgan (can't tell) covered in the middle of the field and Ginn heading upfield with outside coverage. As Smith winds up, Ware gets a hand on the ball, nearly knocking it loose. This is the one regulation sack where Smith might have been able to step to his left and complete it. A QB with better anticipating might pull the trigger a bit faster and complete this one off the initial drop, but Ware turned the corner on a blind side speed rush. Hard for a QB to combat that.

2nd and 17 at our 4 - Shotgun, fake the draw. Weird play. The DE charges upfield, seemingly disrupting the primary read which looked like a pitch to Walker? Smith keeps it and plunges ahead for a few. He might have been able to make the pitch, but it would have been a very risky backward pass. Scrambling was probably the right call here.

Third Drive:

3rd and 12 at our 49 - Gun, empty backfield. Dallas rushes four and Smith has time. Decent enough pass to Davis, who is his primary read, but well short of the first down. Not a good playcall there.

Fourth Drive:

1st and 10 from their 29 - They rush four. Smith has time and Walker slips behind Spencer for the TD. Ball was a little behind him, but good enough to beat the mismatch. Great play design.

3rd and 13 from their 49 - Gun, they rush four and we pick them up. Smith looks to his first read and it's not there. It looks like he gets nervous and takes off up the middle. Nearly get the yardage with a dive, but comes up short. He probably had time to wait for his second or third read to come open here. Poor decision, though a gutsy run. This is the FG and the penalty.

Fifth Drive:

1st and 10 at our 20 - Quick slant to Morgan for 12 yards. That's a play we should be seeing more of IMO.

2nd and 8 at our 35 - Play action, Ware comes around the right edge untouched. Norris probably should have picked him up. No chance for Smith.

3rd and 21 at our 22 - Following a delay of game (inexcusable). Three man rush, designed roll out. Looks like there was nowhere to go and Smith scrambles for a few and slides inbounds to keep the clock moving.

OT:

1st and 10 at our 20 - They send six. Smith steps in between pressure of the middle and to his left and completes it to Ginn for a gain of 12. Pretty good throw given the circumstances.

2nd and 3 - Looks like they are bringing five, but Ware peels off to stick with Gore. Smith starts to go that way, sees Ware, brings the ball back and is hit by Ratliff. This one has been very hotly debated, and I'm not seeing it the way some other people have. Smith is hit as soon as he checks his initial throwing motion. You can argue he should have seen Ware (looks like he was trying to look the DBs off Gore), but not that he should have avoided that sack IMO.

3rd and 11 at our 31 - Smith in the gun. They bring four. Smith steps up to avoid pressure and throws the out to Ginn. Ginn gets his knee down, but juggles it as he goes out of bounds. Play was ultimately reversed, only because Harbaugh called TO. Not a stellar decision by Smith as it wasn't going to get the first down, but a good pass under some pressure.

Other than the drive with the INT, I have no major problem with how Smith played. He played well enough for us to win this one without a doubt in my mind. If the rest of the offense had played as well, there's no question in my mind that we win this one.

Very impressive?

Absolutely very impressive. For him. He wasn't playing at a pro bowl level, perhaps, but he was playing at a high level. I would say that is the best half of football I have seen out of Alex Smith in his career.

You look like a clown in how you keep falling back on the crutch of I can't give evidence of it but I can just feel that Alex Smith is THE problem.

Smith passes thrown since 2005
1558

Other guys
1369

Why did Peyton Manning throw 29 TDs in 2003, 49 TDs in 2004, 28 TDs in 2005?

Did he find a magical amulet in 2004 but then lost it? NO, context matters. The things around him worked better along with him being all he could be.

Have Pirates and Orioles not invested lots of high picks and money into players?
They have but mostly failed.
Brian Matusz has given up as many Earned Runs in 44 innings as prime Pedro or Maddux did in a season.

You're using David Carr, Troy Smith, and Shaun Hill as benchmarks for Alex Smith and this OL? And I'm the clown? :faint:

You do amuse me.
In 2007 Dilfer was worse with taking sacks. Weinke was terrible. Hill was a bit better.

2008 JT was on pace for 70 sacks. Hill took that down to 40.

2009 Hill was going toward 50. Smith was at a 30 rate.

2010 Troy was going to 50 again. Smith was 30 something.

If Alex Smith is the retard with little tangible or intangible QB abilities to avoid sacks why were the replacements usually racking up sacks like mad?

That 2007 team was a firing squad set up to kill Smith.

The OC was pulled out of nowhere. The receiving core was a debacle. In the 20 carries a game during his 6 games the runners were getting 3.8 a carry. 3.5 after you bank than Frank TD run in STL. Didn't matter that we squeaked out to meaningless win to start the year as we traded that pick that should of been a top 3 selection with that end result.
