1) as i have stated numerous times, i didnt think the skins were ready for this game going in sloppiness , penalties and other mental things had me believing we were going to lose

2) KC , williams and breeland had uncharacteristically bad games

3) lack of commitment to the run we avg's 4.8 yds per carry but we hardly touched it

4) the things KC was supposed to be good at , he wasnt , accuracy was off , reads were bad , mechanics were awful

5) defense was inflexible no pressure , poor tackling and lack of conditioning

6) we had a chance to compete with a good team and failed KC appears to have regressed and the d/line is full of nobody's

The tackling was attrototious. Bruton took some bad angels. Is Baker a JAG?

Here's my take. It was one game. Lets see what happens over the next 2 or 3 before we decide that Breeland can't cover or KC was a fluke last year. There clearly are issues. We can't run (or won't) and we can't seem to stop the run. But I dont understand the hate on Breeland. After rematching the game, Breeland really only got beat on 2 plays. The rest were just perfect passes and catches. He was right there stride for stride. Lets remember that he was covering one of the best (both at QB and at WR) 1 on 1 all game. Of more concern to me was are continued inability to adjust at the half on either side of the ball.

My take on the game:

If you don't want to put the only shutdown corner you have on one of the league's best - if not THE best - wr, because you are afraid that it will "show your coverage" then you are a terrible defensive coordinator.

McVay called one quarter of good plays, and three quarters of garbage plays.

Cousins looked nervous - despite ZERO pressure, he rushed throws, threw off his back foot, didn't go through his reads, and was inaccurate in his passes.

The redskins were clearly out of shape compared to the Steelers. 33 year old MeAngelo Williams dusting players almost ten years younger than him? Awful.

No zone busting routes.

No adjustments at halftime - offense or defense.

No blitzes to rattle Big Ben.

No doubling of Bryant.

Awful.

Coaching was awful on both sides of the ball. KC wasn't sharp at all. The talent is there guys we just cant get outcoached. If Barry doesn't think we need pressure to win then we are in big trouble.

Your take on Kirk hit the nail on the head. One positives was pass protection, I still can't believe he was this bad with such little pressure. The other comment I liked in this thread was once again little or no haltime adjustments by the coaching staff. This has been a pattern, hard to see that changing.

I know it was only one game against a really good opponent but I have very real concerns about our QB, which of course will be a huge factor in the team's future.

KC is what many of us said he was after last year. A capable QB that has the ability to run an offense efficiently, but is not the QB that will single handedly win games for you. Think Andy Dalton. SO he needs support. Now clearly he has it in his WR and TE corps. But what he really needs is a running game to keep the defenses honest. IT doesn't even have to be a great running game, just one that can take advantage when the defenses drop 8 into a soft zone. Hell, we couldn't even successfully run a draw into that situation on Monday. Oh yeah, we need a play caller that will commit to running the ball more that 15 times a game. We also need to stop putting our selves in 3rd and forever situations due to dumb as penalties. Kinda limits the plays you can call.

If you believe that the problems the other nt were strictly due to coaching then you are delusional. Sure - coaching contributed to the outcome, but it went way beyond that. Coaches don't make tackles, don't throw INTs, don't have false starts & don't blow assignments. They can help players get prepared in these areas, but a lot falls on the players.

Some of this can be improved in season, but some of this is a lack of talent that will have to be addressed over the next few offseasons. I think that most agree that the Redskins need upgrades in areas like Dline, RB & center. This team can do alright this season, but to believe that they are ready for a deep run this season is probably premature (I hope I am wrong). They are still in the middle of rebuilding so I would again stress that we need to be patient (not to expect results like on Mon but not to expect too much either).

I think that a decent - not great - running game is still possible. It was hard to tell the other nt since they dug a hole and had to play from beyond for most of the 2nd half. If the defense plays like it did for most of that game that may be the case for a good deal of the season which will limit the running game even more. These next two games will be a very good test for this team & several key players.

I agree on the player aspect but coaching was just awful Monday night.

If your assessment of Kirk is correct, and I believe it is, then we are screwed. You need more than a serviceable QB to compete consistently and win big in the NFL, especially today. People like to point to Flacco and Eli but they have had a history of playing huge in big games, Kirk by comparison has wilted like a rose against the good teams. The other examples (Brad Johnson, Ryp, Dilfer etc) were one time flukes that never came close to repeating that success.

Damn....

I sure hope that for Dilfer you are not implying that he did well during that SB run (i.e. that the one time fluke was the Ravens not Dilfer). He basically did nothing that year - he only played in 11 games, had 12 TDS & 11 INTs & minimal yardage. No doubt a team like the current Redskins is not even remotely close to that stellar Ravens defense.

If things work well I believe that Cousins is probably someone in the middle between these game managers and the elite type QBs. Time will tell.

No I'm using Dilfer as that is one of the names always presented to me when I have this debate. To me there is no debate. You need a good QB, or at least a good team with a QB who plays big in big games, to be competing for titles or deep playoff runs. That has been proven over and over and over again. Without that you have virtually no chance of being a competitive team over the years.

KC looked rusty and indecisive. I would chalk that up to a shortened off season.

We have to score to win much like the Colts used to. This takes the other team out of the run game and allows us to rush.

It is impossible to blame the DL because most of you don't consider RK and PS defensive line. Well, that is where we were getting destroyed in the run game. RK and PS when playing over LT created a hole that was never filled by our ILBs.

Joe Barry defends Redskins’ coverage plan against Steelers’ Antonio Brown

interesting stuff here. The way joe barry explains it and the reporter does, makes total sense. let's not forget its not like Brown had a ton of daylight between him and breeland.

Not trying to be a dickhead here, but what was so interesting about it? Or maybe a better question would be. Why did Josh Norman get 75 mill dollars with 50 mill guaranteed to play CB for the Redskins. If it's possible that he may only face an opposing team's best WR 2 times a game?

I'm still a Breeland fan but this does nothing to change my opinion. On the 4th down TD he was there but for some reason slowed at the last instant and failed to read the ball and make a play on it. On the second Barry admitted he got beat.

This number is deceiving. Take away an 8 yard run by Kirk and draw plays by Thompson and you have Matt Jones going 7 for 24 or 3.4 YPC.

I do agree that Kirk looked rusty. Good job Jay playing him so little in the preseason.
